Sager 5320-V Review by doc_simple - Page 4

If you use the SPDIF out to a recieve...couldn't u just plug ur headphones into that jack and let it work that way? or am i just dumb for suggesting something that dumb?
SPDIF is a digital output - it requires a DAC to turn data back into sound. So it's not just a regular audio jack.

But is there some kinda converter that'll let you plug headphones into that, circumventing the faulty audio-out port? I know next to nothing about audio, just asking via logic =P
post #64 of 126
Sure, you could by a converter for the SPDIF out and plug into that.

Certainly there are workarounds for the problem. But the idea of spending additional money to work around design flaws after spending $1500+ on a machine seems ethically wrong.

A headphone jack should simply work. Period. There shouldn't be any sort of goofy interference. If there is, it's a design problem, and it shouldn't be my responsibility to fix it. If I have to spend $N to get the unit to a level of functionality that it should have out of the box, then I should be refunded $N by the manufacturer.

oh my bad I'm dumb...didn't realize what SPDIF really was.

What could be the cause of this problem. Can't be the sound card going bad...so it must be wiring/interference at the headphone out jack.

Also is there any mini pci cards that can be plugged into the lappie but stay flush to the side of the laptop? Dunno if its possible or not.

Personally, the chirping sound doesnt bother me that much. Its ONLY when I use my headphones. When I use my little earbuds or plug it into speakers I DONT hear it. Even when I am hearing it on the headphones, most sounds warsh it out and its like its not even there. Its a perfectly livable quirk, that I think would be easy to get used to.

i recieved my 5320 about two weeks ago, and there are crickets in my machine but like T.V. said most of the time it is masked by the audio track unless your using headphones. i agree that for this kind of money there shouldn't be any flaws and i find it difficult to believe that no one noticed this while the system was in development. but as far as i can tell every notebook has something that sucks about it and most laptop sound cards are sub-par anyway. i'd prefer to drop twenty five on a usb sound device or even seventy five on a pci than have to deal with a bad keyboard or crappy lcd.

Does it come with a DVI to VGA adapter?

yes it has an adapter, I dont know abot running cs at that level rice.

Turtle: I agree that it is something that could be lived with, but I agree most with the part about it costing to much to have stupid issues. I have to thin someone somehere knew about this and ran the formula:

cost of fixing vs. cost of not fixing and its affect on total profit and you can guess what was decided. Has anyone got 5720 yet?

I'm really depressed about the review. The heat issue is enough to send me to Dell. I was hoping this system would kick a$$ for gaming so I didn't have to spend the extra $600-800 on the XPS.

Looks like I waited for nothing. Damn it really p's me off to send Dell the $3300 but their XPS sounds like the best system for the gamer.

Thanks for the reviews guys.

madmax31 did u read about lcd screen on dell m170, i think u might want reading some xps threads, u are in the same situation as i am. Can´t decide, xps or 5720..
You all know the sound isnt over the units regular speakers, correct? Only when using the headphones. All in all, this is a very nice, kick ass computer.
kinda sounds like my winbook si, i have 3 chirps then stop when using headphones

i fired up mobile meter and the clockgen was going crazy due to interference, clock speed bouncing from 685 to 703 mhz

wonder if interference can cause it

Uhhh, sry, I just hate dHell. I'm sure its a nice machine.....that looks like a 70's roller rink disco floor

I just talked with Sager and my 5720 is shipping today, no problems, no BS on my return of the 5320. Actually I will be interested to see how the xps and the 5720 stack up in a shoot out.

I thought it would be acouple of weeks before I got the new lappy, think I'll go do a jig.......
Yeah I'm depressed about it. My dumba$$ didn't pay close enough attention...Guess thats what I get.

dont be depressed I'm sure its a nice machine....and if you really are unhappy you should be able to return it. Also the 5720 is just a bigger 5320 so I kind of expect the same issues in both. That being said I still ponied up the bucks for the 5720!
So if you could sum up, in one final post about your 5320 the Major Pros, Cons, and reasons for returning, that'd be awesome =P
