XPS m140

after seeing the precision m20, im thinking i want something a little more mobile than a 17"er. however, i didnt like how the m20 did not have a glossy lcd, a scroller on the touchpad, and had a crappy ati firegl card.

However, i really liked the idea of having a small 5pound 14" notebook with wsxga+. so after giving it some though, i decided that the perfect notebook for me would be:

14.1" 1680x1050 glossy lcd
4-6 pounds
fairly thin and small
7600/7800 non-gtx go
1gb ram
1.7ghz pentium m or 2.0ghz pinmod
3-5 hour battery life

the biggest thing i dont like about a possible m140 is the fact that it is still an inspiron and not a latitude. the difference in quality between a d810 and i6000 is night and day.

anyway, anyone have any sort of info on if the m140 will have specs similair to this? does anyone know anything about an m140 other than the fact that it will be released some time in the future?

also, anyone know of any other notebook planned by another manufacturer other than dell that would be close to the specs i listed?

Don't want much,do you?
I'm sure all manifacturers would like to know how to build a laptop of that size, with all that hot hardware in it,that doesn't burn your legs or catch fire or drive you insane with fan noise,THAT LASTS FOR 4-5 HOURS!
Can't see it somehow, the Sony s360 is about the closest anybody has got to the nirvana you would like, and from what I've read about it,it runs very hot with a lot of fan noise and thats with a graphics card about a third of the speed your wanting.

a notebook with those kind of specs is unlikely.... very highly unlikely....

mayb fuel cell powered it could get that battery life w/ such a power sucking processor.

Isn't the XPS M140 just a rebranded 610m or something?

Either way, those specs are not happening.

it's not that farfetched. Hell, even sony made the S170/270/360 which had better specs when it first came out (top of the line graphics, 13", capable of using the fastest P-M, 2 GB of memory max, 4 hours battery, 7.5 on extended).

more like power sucking graphics card
the proc dusnt use more than 30 watts

the d610 has those same specs other than the glossy lcd and the video card. a 7600 shouldnt be too much heavier/power hungry than an x300, and a glossy screen is exactly the same as a regular one in terms of weight.

the d610 is about 5ish pounds and gets 4 hours of battery with the x300, so wouldnt it be fair to assume that an xps m140 with a 7600 can be 6ish pounds and get 3 hours of battery?

oh, there is also a uniwill lappy that can switch between a 6600 and integrated GMA gfx to increase battery life. that might also be a possibility with an m140.

ummm im not sure it is even possible, from what i know it is not physically possible to switch between those things.

more proof!

this is from compal, the company that makes insprions,

http://www.discountlaptops.com/index...egory_theme=c1

14", less than 5 pounds, geforce go 6400, 3hr battery, just 1 inch thick.

with the powersavings of the 7 series cards, its highly likely that a system like the one i descrived could be created. even if it adds an extra pound and a half inch in thickness, it is still not a big deal.

seeing as how compal makes dell lappys, i think it would be very likely that this one might become the base of the m140. all they would need to do is change the video card and get a better lcd.

*External VGA On/Off Switch

A selection must be made before turning on the notebook. If the video switch is left at the ON position, the computer will boot to the discrete graphics processor (Nvidia GeForce Go 6600, which offers better performance but consumes more power). If the switch is left at the OFF position, the computer will boot using the integrated graphic engine (Intel GMA900, which offers lower performance but consumes less power).

The M140 doesn't look anything like that system, it looks like an Inspiron 6000 only slightly smaller and it has an extra button on the front panel... Also, it has Intel graphics only, no NVidea or ATI cards...

Pretty nice system you got there.. hope you enjoy.

It's quite simple, most motherboards with onboard graphics card offer you the facility to switch from an onboard card to a discrete card, that's all this notebook has to do - it is genuine and does work although it uses a midrange graphics card, I think this sort of thing would be much more beneficial on top of the range graphics cards as they draw a lot of power.

Wouldn't a new Dell XPS M140 resemble the Dell XPS M170 (albeit a smaller version) since it is an XPS??? Also, where are the pics of this "Inspiron 6000 lookalike" XPS M140?

As for the appearance, not necessarly, marketing can do what ever they want and make it appear however they want. I promose you, it has a white border, not black, and no LED's.

I'm not going to bother uploading pictures. Last time I did anyway, (XPS Gen 2 running a 7800 GT video card with 3Dmark05 results) someone who had no clue what they were talking about (that seems to run rampant on these forums...) called it a chop, and it wasn't...

Wait a few weeks till it is released and you will see that I am correct. You can take this knowledge or leave it, your call.

I would like to see it, if you don't mind emailing me the pic... I PM'ed you my email addy.

Thanks.

since the m140 isnt out yet its hard to say, the new inspirons are much better built than before and NOT A NIGHT AND DAY difference between inspiron and latitude lines as you imply since the inspirions now have mag alloy in the lcd lid and chassis base.

I have seen pictures of this new M140 and it's basically a cross between the Inspiron 6000 and the 700m. Basically it looks like the I-6000 with a battery sticking out the back like the 700m. White, black & gray scheme and looks thick and bulky like the I-6000, totally dissapointed in what I have seen. But it might still be an ideal solution for those who think the I-6000 is too big and the 700m too small.
