Heat-Related Shutdown

Thread Starter
I've been experiencing a serious problem with my 9860 that I'm hoping some of the Sager veterans on here can assist me with.

I've been having what I believe to be serious heat-related problems with my 9860 that seem to have gotten worse over the past 1-2 months. There are two issues:

1) The machine will rarely reboot properly from a warm boot (system restart) when running at peak temperature. In order to start the machine from a cold boot when it's been turned off after running for at least 20 minutes, it will not start up unless it's given about 7-10 minutes to cool down.

2) However, the more serious problem is that I have been getting spontaneous shut-downs over the past 90 days. The system will be functioning normally, and then, all of a sudden, the computer will just turn off. I've noticed that this almost always happens when I'm playing a graphically-intensive video game like World of Warcraft in 1680 x 1050 resolution.

I downloaded Mobmeter and noticed that the machine generally runs at around 71-76 degrees celsius, but that while playing World of Warcraft, that temperature rises to 80-85. I believe that the machine shuts down automatically once the temperature reaches 85.2 degrees.

I've gone back through three pages of threads and noticed that others have had the same problems while playing graphically-intensive games. I cleaned out my intake fans but am still having the problem. Would installing the new BIOS and firmware allow me to get improved fan performance? What do I do here? Unfortunately I'm currently working from South America, and cannot have the machine serviced by Sager. It's getting to the point where this is happening with increasing frequency.

Thank you!

I'm having almost the same problem as you deal. Also same degrees with Battlefield2. I've added extra two cooling fans to under the notebook with no results. There should be solution for that.

71-76 is way too hot. Does the machine have an "always on high" fan option (Fn+F2 I think someone indicated)? If so use it when playing intense games.

How HOT is the room that you in? Is it air conditioned?

Try raising the entire machine up by perching it on a stack of dimes and quarters. Use three rolls of quarters (use five or six quarters stacked) under the rear of the unit and two rolls of dimes (use six or seven dimes) under the front of the unit. Hold the "rolls" of coins together using scotch or electrical tape - whichever works best for you. Also, since you aren't in the USA, similiar sized coins can be substitued for the dimes and quarters.

Using the coins as a perch for the unit should greatly improve the air flow. Something very significant if the room is normally warm (over 80 degress F).

If the "lights start blicking" near the LCD, then it's time to contact SAGER. If there is a BIOS update that allows the "Fast Fan" options, I would recommend that you update the unit to use that BIOS.

EDIT - Added comment: I believe that the unit should operate in the mid 40C temp range when "idling". Check to insure that there aren't any "other stuff" running on the idle machine that may be overtaxing your system.

Had the same problems: Solution 1. Artic silver to the graphics card and get rid of the thermal pads 2. Bios/firmware does help.
Problem started like yours, read here
Artic silver helped a lot though, could play games again. Maybe Sager can send some to South America. How hot is the room you are using it in?
Even after a couple of months of artic silver my computer was running rediculously hot and giving me problems (here)
The solution for that was an RMA for a new graphics card. The bios update does help though.

Ok i was actually using a Prostar 9096 which is the same Sager 9880. I've flashed the bios with Sager and updated my graphic card drivers to 77.70(quadro fx 1400) Heat issued problems seem resolved after playing 2 hours of battlefield. Heat never passed above 68C. I'll contunie to test it.

Try to remove the heatsink of the CPU and get rid of the dust there. That might solve the problem. But U should be carefull removing and reattaching it to the cpu.. Might be you will need some new thermal compound to reattach it the proper way...

the thermal pads between the GPU and cooler and CPU and cooler are rubbery silicone. they do not transfer heat all that well. the reason they are used is sometimes the heat sinks in these laptops do not fit totaly flush so the pads can be thick anough to fill in that gap. however on the CPU and GPU they do fit flush and you can replace them with artic silver and get a massive improvement in cooling. my laptop was already converted to AS5 when i bought it second hand . but the guy told me all about them thermal pads. in many other places in the laptop those pads are used since fitting the heat sinks flush would be near impossible. i wish they all sat flush so i could convert to 100% AS5

OK so just the CPU and GPU get Artic'd? Also what about the laptop cooler's I know Coolermaster's got the best review.

I am going to be taking my Sager 9860 to Thailand, while it does hit 110F I will be using it mostly at night, which is still 75-80+ so I am looking for ANY little tricks to help cool this beast.

Might note that 110F is 43.3C. That is about 10C above the safe operating temps on most laptops. Anything over about 98F (33C) and you are asking for a burned up unit. Maybe perching the unit uver dry ice will help.

Well I won't be using the laptop out in the sun in Southern Thailand. And if I score big certain school give an airconditioned room for their hired teachers
But when I hit the internet cafes it will be up in Chiang Mai far away from the 110+ degress but even there it hits 95-100 in summer months

I knew I could have gotten a much more heat friendly laptop but the 9860 is soooo pretty

You could take a look at some laptop coolers. There are a few good ones to chose from, Coolermaster/Vantec/Targus all make decent models.

...you sure about that? I mean, not being a safe operating temp. Reason I ask is, my 9880 runs in the 40C range all the time. The fans hardly ever even come on, since it's not so hot. I'm running Mobmeter.

My old Dell Inspiron 8200, with a mobile pentium, ran this cool too. It had no heat problems.

I'm not so sure that the 40C range is hot.

Anyone here have their lappy running in the 20/30C range?????

My general point is that the machine can not operate at a temperature lower than the ambient temperature. If you are located "outside of the elements", then the 110F is of no concern.

I did "One Time" see an operating temperature of 27C on my 8790; however, when I opened email, it went into the low 30's.

Painkiller - I doubt that you are operating your lap top in a room that is 110F HOT!

Cheers

I think he is refering to the temperature of the room/area the machine can run at hotter temps but if the room is 43c then the Machine's heat will put it at a temperature substantially higher than it would be in a room of s 33c. so the operating temp is not the temp that the machine is putting off but the Temperature of the area that the machine is to be operating in.

DOH!!!! I got 'cha now.

No. My room isn't that hot!!!
