Slow program loading on boot, CHKDSK related...

Hey guys, hoping you can help me out here.

I noticed that my I6000 with xp sp2 is running quit slowly upon booting. So slow in fact that firefox for instance is clicked open and doesnt actually display till 2-4 minutes later. I'm able to freely using programs after the initial slow period, but I decided to defrag my HD. I got this when i tried to defrag.

"Scheduled to run chkdsk. Please run chkdsk /f and then defragment"

I tried that...and then...

"Cannot open volume for direct access, would you like to run chkdsk when windows starts?" Clicked yes...

Upon restarting windows xp...I got this...

"Cannot open volume, windows has finished running chkdsk"

Ooooooooook. I guess the volume can't be accessed at all. Anyway, the computer restarted just fine and from now on, I have to wait the usual 2-4 minutes to use my computer upon booting it up. Can anybody tell me how to fix this so I can run chkdsk and defrag? Hopefully its not a faulty HDD...

Christ bad things could have happened to your hard drive. My advice is format the bloody thing and see what that turns up!

If bad things happened to my HD, I wouldnt be talking here to you on my laptop. Does anybody have any other advice?

Well if you cant get chkdsk to run properly and your getting horrible load times then see if your getting similar problems with anything else that would require intensive loading like.... Loading a game of high quality such as HalfLife2 or Doom3. If you get similar issues then it may infact either be a bad disk ( which doesnt make it unusable just harder to bear with ) Or windows going ape nuts on you. So if you can do it a format wouldnt be so bad since WinXP does a chk on the disk (different tool) before it does any sort of copying and such.

It's just that it only starting doing the slowdown recently and I havent installed any new programs. Hmmm. Perhaps defragging on safe mode?

A hard drive with problems doesn't necessarily die completely and all at once. Granted, the format suggestion is a bit overboard, but that doesn't mean that Maverick2o2 or DELL-Machina are wrong.
Boot off your XP CD into the recovery console and run CHKDSK /P. If it says it can't check the drive there, it is physically damaged.
Defragging a hard drive that is physically damaged has better than 50/50 odds of completely wrecking your Windows install. Slowdowns in general computer use due to fragmentation are more huff and puff from defrag companies wanting your dollar than a reality. Fragmentation won't cause boot and program loading times to quadruple overnight.

Start>My Computer>Right Click on the hard drive>Click Properties>Select Tools>Select Check Now>Check "Automatically fix file system errors" and "scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors">Start

My external hard drive had this problem and this fixed it. Good luck.

Tried it to no avail. Everytime the computer boots up, it tries to check, but "Can't open volume for direct access"

Anyway, the computer is working fine as I type but still...it takes 2-4 minutes to actually be able to use programs once it boots and thats annoying.
