My new m170 gets a 3DMark05 score of 6575 Out of box

As soon as I got the system, plugged it in , booted up, went through Dell's annoying welcome screens, downloaded 3DMark05, and ran it.

No software was removed or modified.

Now it's time to format the bad boy and get a clean install on there.

I need to see at least 7100+ before I get one with a 7800.

QFT

My freaking ultra is 600 points behind that and has 1/2 the amount of pixle pipes.

Re

i dont think the 3d mark scores even matter TBH. the improvements come from other stuff like shader optimizing etc. im sure many games will get a major boost from the 7800 which wont really be seen in something like 3d mark. My first upgrade will be the 1440x900 screen which really isnt an upgrade persay, but will give me some major performance for the buck. the loss of the resolution will be a bummer at first but will be worth it in the long run ,then when things get to slow ill snag a 7800. i was gonna get the wxga screen a couple months back but decided to wait till i ran games in 1920 and the frames just werent up to par without cutting all the eye candy off just to play it.. ie COD2 Serious sam2 and im sure Quake4 .

Geez... it is still just a benchmark. I'll be testing real games through the week after the format and reinstall of all my goodies are done.

Yup, I agree...

I was 6630 out of the box....but really who cares?

Minesweeper is silky smooth....and FreeCell... well fogettaboutit!

In fact I think I'm going to spend all my time on my new laptop playing the games I got free with Windows!

I love how everyone says how useless 3DMark05 is, but run around comparing scores and shouting for bencharks. It's a nice way to compare systems.

Photographers compare EXIF data (and lenses), hotrodders compare horsepower, gamers compare 3D Mark... Nothing wrong with it in my opinion.

i wasnt saying that 3d mark isnt a good cause it is . i mean if i went out today and bought 2 7800 for some SLI goodness one of the first things i would check would be 3d mark just for shits and giggles, and to compare it to a similar system so i knew i was doin OK . . now im thinking more about the fact that my 6800ultra in my XPS 2 might be damn near as fast as a 7800go in benchmarks. i also think that in some if not all games cause of the optimizing theyve done with the new chipset the margin will be a lot larger then the numbers i would see in 3d mark and thats all i was saying also as games become more detailed with physics etc the CPU will be just as large as a factor as the GPU . just ranting

There is no doubt at all that 7800go GTX will stomp on the 6800go Ultra. I don't rely on benchies either, even tho I said I was 600 points behind. 7800 @ 1920x1200 will kick the shit out of my 6800 any day no matter how overclocked I am.

Zyb's 7500 3DMark @ 459/1200 score looked pretty nice

3dmark at least gives a ballpark idea. The 7800 seemed to be almost a trivial increase in performance according to the early Sager benchmarks, but it looks like it has much more potential...especially in the XPS 2.

I'm going to try and get it as a replacement for my 6800 ultra, which is giving me crap now and then. It's worth getting excited about, at least for me. Then again, any possible upgrades for my laptop do that. Meh, at least it's not as expensive as other hobbies...

Jesus, don't mention those damn things.

Fresh pack: $100
Fresh brushes: $5
Fresh tires: $20
Fresh rims: $10
Fresh inserts: $10
Replacement parts: $20

And that's just for the actual race day, not the stuff you bring with you.

(Sigh) Looking over at the dusty R/C Trucks and Helos that haven't been used in years . . .(Sigh)

R/C cars are nothing compared to what people spend on their real cars. I know a lot of people that are into that...they've got rims, TV screens, video game consoles, stereos, speakers, body kits, tinted windows, and then a ton of work done on the engine for more horsepower. That adds up to tens of thousands of dollars. In fact, one of the people I'm talking about put $30,000 into his BMW...and he's not rich either. A few hundred dollars for a new laptop part is peanuts in comparison.

As you might guess, I don't drive a catchy car. Nor do I care.

I know first hand about that bad addiction. I used to have a 3000GT VR-4 and put in over $5K in mods into that car. It was really nice and fast, but it also ended up costing me over another $3K in court, impound, and ticket fees. Thankfully, I'm away from all that now. Every cent I had free after rent and bills went into that car. Not to mention I had to always buy 100 octane gas cause of the mods, and that was really expensive at $5 a gallon! I had to sell it after only 2 years of ownership cause it was getting so outta control.

Buying and upgrading a few laptops is soooo much cheaper!

I couldn't agree more...... I am on my way to pick up the new wheel (replacement after 6 months of usage...20' Maya STMd) and 4 new tires... Price?? I am throwing $2.2k just for that (1 wheel and 4 tires).

That is why I order mine M170 4 days ago when 30% coupon. I should be getting it next week to replace my old ZD7000.

I keep reading about screen issue. I hope the screen at leaset have the same quality as my old ZD7000 and I'll be fine.(1680X1050 screen).

Nice to join notebook forums. I have been around here for 2 years, but just decide to join and post the first one here
