Wireless router + wireless card (built in 2200 or 2915?) is all you need. A little bit of smarts to set it up and a few more to lock it down.

Well.. make sure you router is setted up with wireless connectivities and your Windows XP SP2 should detects wireless signal enabling you to connect to it. Once you have conneted to your router, you can just surf the net.

If you have a WPA2/WPA/WEP setted up, you will need to type in the encrytion codes when Windows ask you to insert WPA2/WPA/WEP in order to connect.

The other thing... did you know Wireless N is coming before christmas. Wireless G and G+ prices are dropping. I'm going to look for the Wireless N mini-pci card.

I wouldnt hold your breath on 802.11N it isnt due out untill next year (from what I have read). Just recently there was a branch off to "speed" up the process but it dosent look good so far. The companies cant agree on the standard and are not going by the IEEE process (again from what I have read). If you have 802.11G you should be fine for a little while.

As for your problem you didnt say if you had your Router connected and I never want to assume. So you connect your modem to your Router. Then hard wire (cat5) ti your main PC, (IF it is going to be right by your router) Set up your router MAKE SURE you set up security for it and dont leave it open. You dont want people sharing your connection and eating up your bandwith.....
I would recconed WPA security setting and then enter the "keys" when asked to as said before. You also can wirelessly connect your entire home if you have the capablilty to do so. I have read that people sometimes have problems setting up thier routers if they do it this way though. you XP2 should Auto detec your wireless network out of the Box and all you need to do is enter the keys fo authentication.

Well I am a n00b of some sorts so all that I have said may not be right but I hope it helps a little. Good Luck...

Folks, as my router is not wireless is there some sort of wireless transmitter/receiver that I can plug into one of my router's ports so as well as having my other PC's hardwired to it I can still be mobile without having to shell out for a wirless router? Cheers

I think the best route and please correct me if I am wrong is just to get a wireless router they aer cheap enough now where you can just replace your wired router. Access Point cost the Same if Not more now a days (just did a qucik search) then a Router........well I wish ya luck......

I don't know how Netlink's router is set up, but I do know that my Linksys wireless router has 4 ethernet ports to hardwire computers directly into the router. So I can wire up to four comps plus still have wireless access for any computer with the appropriate wireless networking card / network adapter. My router also came with a 3ft ethernet cable (which had me confused since it was a WIRELESS router =P -- came in handy though).

If the Netlink router you mentioned is set up like mine then all you have to do is hardwire any computers you need to, and let the wireless networking card built into your XPS automatically detect your wireless router and do the rest.
