MSI 1013(s270)

I'm looking to purchase my first laptop and have been eyeing the MSI ms-1013. http://www.msicomputer.com/NB/produc...?model=MS-1013 I was wondering if anybody has had any experience with MSI notebooks. I can't seem to find much on them. I was thinking of doing the whitebook thing and building it myself but I don't know how this effects any sort of warranty.

Also for now I would probably go the cheap route and just get a Mobile Athlon 64. This is a decent processor or should I consider the 1012 instead and get a P4?

I'm hoping to do this all for around $1000 which from the looks of things I can certainly swing. I am open to suggestions for other systems. I would mostly be using it for word, itunes, internet, and maybe the occasional video/photo editing. I also need it to be small and light. thanks.

I'm pretty sure the 1012 won't run a P4, and I don't think the 1013 will run a Mobile Athlon 64. With the 1012 your stuck with Celeron M or Pentium M, and with the 1013 you're stuck with Semprom M or Turion.

Sorry I meant Pentium M not P4. MSI's website doesn't list celeron M support for the 1012 just Pentium M so I wasn't sure if I could still use one or not. Also the following is on MSI's website regarding the 1013
"Processor Supports Socket 754 Mobile AMD Athlon™ 35 Watt / Mobile Sempron™ 25 Watt / Turion™ 64 MT and ML processors"
Looks like there isn't much price difference to get a sempron so I will probably go that route instead anyway.

If it's a choice between Sempron and Pentium M, go Pentium M, unless you *really* need the extra graphics power the AMD platform will provide.

Keep in mind that the AMD system has a X200M GPU. It's integrated graphics, so you must realize that it's not like you will get a whole lot more than a comparable Pentium M system. Not saying here that this or that IG card is better or worse (because I've never used X200M or even saw bechmarks).

So, this "extra graphics power" is not really a "power" .

edit: by the way, not only semprom. it also (and that's the main reason to buy that notebook over the P-M) supports A64s.

What is the biggest difference between the Pentium m and the sempron mobile? Is there a large performance difference? I've always liked AMD in my desktops but I'm new to notebooks. thanks for all the input.

Actually, the X200 in the S270 is about 40% more powerful than the GMA900 in the S260.

40%? thats quite a bit how did you come up with that number?

More around 33% I'm not sure about the MSI 1012 but I know the 1013 gets around the low 600s in 3dmark05 and the 1012 probaly gets around 400.

The X200 is between 0% and 100% better, depending on the game. The X200 really shines with it's DirectX 9 support, which GMA 950 does not support.
