I hav ehad my 9860 since March 17th with no problems as of yet
post #4 of 44
Which one?

My 3360V was ordered in September 2000 and my 8790 was ordered when they first came out about 18 months ago. I did return my initial 8790 and ordered a replacement shortly thereafter.

I've had my Sager 5680 since October of 2003 (leave from Iraq). I took it back to Iraq with me and i lost my harddrive there in 4 months (i'll blame it on the sand). I got it fixed after I redeployed. I'm gettin the cracked hinges now but all in all I've loved this laptop.

Just placed an order for a 5720

9860 since March 10th, '05. Dead DVD within 3 months, Dead Mobo 3 months after that. Both replaced. Had to mail it in for the Mobo and that took about a week.

I got mine on September 12th, so...a month ago, today. It's been great! I haven't had any real problems with it, except the normal shortcomings of the 4750 (i.e. poor battery life, loud fan, etc.) I intend to get another Sager someday when this one wears out and I can afford another one!

8790- Had it for about 17 months now. Have had the motherboard replaced due to artifacting and recently the DC-in connector and HD both went at the same time (very odd). I also have cracks on the hinges.

Geeze, do all laptops have this many problems??
I've had mine for almost a year and had to send it in once for a motherboard replacement. It came back just lovely.... Only problem I've had. Oh, and if everyone that bought laptops joined forums you would probably find that failures and problems were a lot fewer than you think.

Ya, this thread is a bit disturbing considering I want to buy the 5720....

I find it kind of hard to believe that my Inspirion 8500 (never needed to use the warranty at all) has been working flawlessly for 2.5 years now while all these people with there Sagers are reporting all these problems….

I’ll blame poor sample size for now, as the population having no problems hasn't chimed in yet...

I would hate to have a better experience with a Dell computer vs. a Sager.

I have read much about the cracked hinges awhile ago.... If Sager hasn't figured this one out by now I seriously doubt the overall quality.

but damn, it seems like the majority of the people with 4/5 series sagers have cracked hinges. is it really an issue? is it just cosmetic or does it totally make the laptop useless?

Since july 27 2004...currently it's at sager for repairs...been there a while too.

I´ve had my Sager 4020 since May 2003. It has worked flawlesly except I had *TWO* hard drive failures in this period. In most laptop models I've seen, of any brand, all the thermal consideration has always gone to the CPU and graphics chipset (recenlty with the big gorilla GPUs) but never to the hard drive which is probably the single most sensitive of all the components.

Anyway, the rest of the machine still works great.

Last December is when mine came in. It is fab. No issues really except the fans and that was taken care of.

All I'm seeing is the high, high end laptops have issues. I'm not surprised in the sense that your shoving hardware that creates a lot of heat in very a small box and you're probably pushing it hard playing new games. Maybe the technology is just not ready to be put into such small form factors.

Look at the heatsinks on the 7800 and the 6800 and the x850. They are undoubtably more efficient then what goes in a laptop. In laptops a lot of heat passes from the GPU to the rest of the components on the motherboard which are not made to get so hot over long periods of time. On the laptops the damn cpu and gpu are inches appart on the same board.

I'm not saying it can't be done I'm just saying that its not ideal. To make matters a lot worse add a p4 prescott based cpu or athlon and you have over 100watts of heat there.

hey just have to add, these machines are amazing pieces themselves. usually people who join forums and are vocal are those looking for troubleshooting help and/or notebook enthusiasts, so i wouldnt be suprised if you got alot of problems with them. most of the people that are more then satisfied are not on forums.

got a 8790 i ordered mid-june 04. sent it back just before 1 yr was up for minor but madddd annoying artifacting. got mobo replaced. been awesome since. no hdd problems (x2 raid 0). construction is overall great, no complaints.

recommended a few 5690s and 8790s to my friends back when i bought mine, and they have had no problems at all.
