How long have you had your sager? - Page 2

I know of several Dell PC and laptop owners that have had nothing but trouble... The goes for HP, Sony, toshiba, as well as others... There is a reason that laptops have outsold desktops in the past few months...

I find it kind of hard to believe that my Inspirion 8500 (never needed to use the warranty at all) has been working flawlessly for 2.5 years now while all these people with there Sagers are reporting all these problems….

I’ll blame poor sample size for now, as the population having no problems hasn't chimed in yet...

I would hate to have a better experience with a Dell computer vs. a Sager.

I have read much about the cracked hinges awhile ago.... If Sager hasn't figured this one out by now I seriously doubt the overall quality.
Im definitely having second thoughts on purchasing a sager now.

Ive had this gateway solo for YEARS and the only thign wrong with it is LOOSE hinges easily replaced! Never anything wrong with it at all. Worked fine forever.

got a 8790 i ordered mid-june 04. sent it back just before 1 yr was up for minor but madddd annoying artifacting. got mobo replaced. been awesome since. no hdd problems (x2 raid 0). construction is overall great, no complaints.

recommended a few 5690s and 8790s to my friends back when i bought mine, and they have had no problems at all.

This is true.

Granted they are powerful machines no doubt, but how come I keep reading horror stories about these hinges.... not just here either. Disc. Laptop’s forum and many others have customers posting of the exact same issues. Hinges man! These are no technologically complex devices, just hinges...

I expect to buy a laptop with the intention that it will last me at least 3 years without needing to send it back for repair (especially for the prices these high perf. ones are going for).

I don't have a personal vendetta against Sager but I do read everything that I can in the time that I have. I've been researching Sager for over 2 months now... I really would like to purchase one of there laptops but I have some serious questions regarding their overall quality.

The hinge problem is at the top of my list right now and needs to get answered. Why are so many people having problems with cracked hinges? I mean it doesn’t take a physicist or a mechanical engineer to figure out how to carefully open a notebook.

Logically this leads to the next question…. If Sager/Clevo is incapable of designing adequate hinges what else on these machines are poorly designed? The name brand components they may have but this means nothing if the machine is poorly designed.

I've had my 4780 for about 18 months. I purchased it and about a month later the 4791 and 4750 came out. The biggest difference was mine had the ATI 9600 and the new ones had the 9700. My graphics card failed and it was attached to the MB so i had to get the MB replaced in the last month of the regular warranty. Remember the GPU was made by ATI. About 4 months ago I got a message "Hard Drive failure emminent" so iI replaced it myself with a 100 gig seagate. I have no cracked hindges and no evidence that I ever will. I have seen pictures of other brands of laptops with cracked hindges. I've had 3 laptops and never had that problem. I'm planning on and will buy another Sager and it will be the 5720. I'm 100% satisfied with Sager.

I agree with tempxm

also- why is everyone's motherboard failing?

is this normal in other brands?... such as dell?

...eta... I guess I will find out.

Just curious because I've been thinking about getting a Dell Inspiron then heard about the sager 3880 and changed my mind.

Regarding laptop hinges, I've had a Toshiba Satellite and a Dell Inspiron and on both of these the hinges broke after 2-3 years. It doesn't surprise me that these parts break - mechanical components eventually fail. That's why hard drives eventually fail.

Regarding motherboards, I agree with the previous poster that heat is a killer. I don't own a Sager, but I just ordered the 5720. I hope that it will be more reliable since the heat should be much less than the other DTRs with P4s, etc.

since March on this year, no problem so far with it with a use of 50 hours/week.

I have had my 8890 since August of 03...never had any issues! Not bad considering i had it shipped to me in iraq and ended up roasting with me in dessert heat 6 months.

8790, since July 2004. Failed HD and loose headphone jack, both of which I got replaced/repaired under warranty. Otherwise, no big problems and it's been great. No regrets here.

i used a 1.5-2 year old sager and it was still working flawlessly before i sold it

other than that, i have used so many old DELL laptops (like 2 years oldies) and they work flawlessy neither

Can't speak for all other brands, but can say that my first laptop (Fujitsu Pentium 133) had to have its motherboard replaced and was on track for a 2nd replacement when it was stolen in-house by a Future Shop employee.

So it's not just Sager. But it still is hard to have faith in them now that I'm in the middle of problems. I've got a Sony that has given me very little in the way of problems. Can't say I'm not tempted to replace my 8790 w/ a Sony.

4th year of SAGER 4200

I bought mine SAGER 4200 from mobileperipheralz.com and it arrived on 21st.December 2001
So my poor guy will be 4 years in two months.
Battery died after maybe two years, I spilled water on keyboard couple of times, had to take notebook apart to dry it out as it was not working for almost whole day.Dropped notebook on ground from table or from unzipped carrying bag.Had my NIC cooked by storm (along with NIC in desktop) so I am using PCMCIA card. Fans are quite noisy as I was just unable to get to them to lube them or clean out. For maybe last year I got problem with video, there are vertical stripes black stripes(1-2px wide) across screen when playing back videos (tried all players, didn't help). Only thing that helped from beginning was to push plastic where left speaker is down, that stopped stripes for some time, but now not even that helps. Also turning off video acceleration in windows helps, but video playback sucks then (even more than with stripes that the eye get's accomodated to eventually)

I use notebook dayily, was commuting with it for 2 years and I am surprised it still works. I am just waiting to save sme bucks and/or my current lapie dies and I will probably go for new Sager
