sager 5720 vs. dell xps gen 2 VALUE OR PERFORMANCE WISE?
I've been wanting the Dell for a couple months now and kept putting off buying it but I'm glad I did now because Sagers are soo much better and they finally have something lighter than that beast 9880 and it has a P-M.

One of my friends has an XPs2 and it is very fast and seems to be great but the parts Dell uses are very inferior to what Sager uses. I have an older Sager and another friend has the 9880 and its very well built with a much nicer display/keyboard etc than the Dell. Dells seem to have fans die, cd/dvd drives die a lot more often than Sager does.

I'm not saying that I wouldn't buy the Dell because I was going to but if I did I would seriously consider the 3-4 year warranties with them.

This is what one gets for asking: Totally opposing views.

The XPS2 is definitely better made than any of the Sagers. Most of the internals are similar or identical (screens, etc). It might not look it, but the XPS case is much more solid. I'd definitely prefer to have an XPS2 over a Sager of any sort. The same does not go for some of the other Dells. Mind you, I'd also prefer to have the good sager keyboard in an XPS.

That said, I'm about to order a 5720 Sagar primarily because it gives me the same features plus a couple and I can get it for a fair bit less than what it costs to bring in an XPS. I can't say I like the cheap plasticky look of the 5720 though... yechh... I'll just bite my lip and grin

Valuewise: Better value for me cos I can't use a coupon.
Performancewise: Should be indentical seeing as it has identical parts in it... though somewhere I read that the battery life is less in the 5720... might be smaller/cheaper battery.

sager screens are better, same specs but higher quality from what ive seen.

anyway, the 5720>m170. it has more features and weighs less, which makes it a better notebook. both should perform about the same.

as for price, the 5720 is at its best when you buy it with just 512mb ram, no windows, and a 1.7ghz cpu. this config costs right under 2k, and with a gig of ram from newegg, the total should be about 2070. a basic m170 will cost 2300 with coupons, but it will have a 2ghz cpu instead of the 1.7ghz and come with windows. it will also only have a gig of ram as opposed to the total 1.5gb in the 5720. if you want to play bf2, then you will want either 1.5gb or 2gb.

if i had to choose, i would get the sager because the extra ram is going to improve gaming performance more than the extra mhz in the cpu. the price is much lower as well if you dont load it up. once you do, then the dell would have the price advantage. but $2k is already pushing it for me.

Edit: battery in m170 is 9cell, 5720 is 8 cell, so it is slightly smaller.

Anyone order the 5720 yet?

My xps can hit alittle more than 2 hours on battery so I imagine it would be about the same for the 5720. The 5720 has some nice specs for a reasonable price but it does look alittle plain.

Well, it doesn't have those lights... but I don't want decorative lights on my car or my notebook! But it the power goes out, it could help you get to the exit in a dark building.

I don't know, I'm more about whats inside than outside; unless its pink and I wouldn't touch it.

i am writing this on an xps gen2. if sager's palm rest feels cheaper than this one than i do not want a 5720 at all. the plastics on this xps gen2 are way cheaper and flimsier than the xpsgen1 i used to own, that was a solid machine, it felt like one and perfomed like one. i am not impressed with the build quality of the gen2.
i have been wanting the new xps with the 7800 but the price has been way over its value. sager has hit my pocket book sweet spot! i am getting one of those bad boys! i am asuming that sager won't keep us from OC'ing the video? I also LOVE that full size keyboard with the number pad and i think the sager is a much better looking machine than the m170... yep, i will soon be a sager man!

Would be nice if you could oc the cpu a bit on the Sager too /sigh

Another plus is the benefit of being able to use standard Nvidia driver releases on the Sager. That's one of the stupid things they should have allowed on the Dells but didn't.
