CPU usage maxed...help! - Page 2

Guys I had this problem with my pc, and know a bunch of others who it has happened to. Here is the fix summarized nicely from another forum. (it has to do with how windows handles .avi files, affects a lot of people who use kazaa, etc.)

Hi,

It has to do with how Windows XP previews files when opened with
explorer. Suggested workarounds: Go to Start/Run/Regedit and navigate
to the key below and delete the default data (right pane).

For AVI's

HKEY CLASSES ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\.avi\
shellex\PropertyHandler

For MP3's

HKEY CLASSES ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\.mp3\shellex\PropertyHandler

Note: Make a backup (export) the key before editing just for
precautionary measures.

Workaround #2:

Go to Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to the key below and either delete
it or rename it. Ex. Right click/Rename and add -off to the end.

For AVI's
HKEY CLASSES ROOT\.avi\ShellEx\{BB2E617C-0920-11d1-9A0B-00C04FC2D6C1}

For MP3's - Clear out the Value data here:
HKEY CLASSES ROOT\.mp3\PersistentHandler

hope this works for you guys! Worked for me!

Maybe, just maybe it might be fixed now.

Vandal, I thank you for your suggestion, but that wasn't it this time.

The more I thought about it the more I knew it had to be a communication problem. If it wasn't software related it had to be hardware, virus (etc...) or settings. I started looking through the settings on the mini pci card since I always use my wireless connection. Some way or another the Ad hoc Demo mode was enabled. I disabled it thinking that it might be getting confused and trying to make more than 1 connection at a time. Before I did this it kept locking up on the MSNBC page this morning. After I changed that setting it has loaded it and other problem pages without going off into never never land overdrive on me. It has settled down and behaved for me at times before so it will take a while to be sure, but it is acting better in other ways as well. Pages are loading much faster and the signal is a little stronger. We will see if that was what the problem was.

Never mind. It just did it again.

one more try for you, if you have SP1 installed, delete this key, deals with the same issue as the other ones:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/Classes/CLSID/{87D62D94-71B3..../inprocserver32

Here's the latest. It is not a Norton problem. I downloaded a new AV program, disabled Norton and it still did it. This time it only listed IE as the CPU hog. Next I downloaded Opera to try another browser. It did the same thing. Since it uses the same engine as IE, I thought that might be the problem. I have now downloaded Mozilla and SO FAR it hasn't done it yet. This all started after I flashed the BIOS with the original fix to enable HT (I got my 8887 before HT came enabled). I'm guessing it corrupted something in the way IE runs. Mozilla uses the Netscape engine. I have only put about 1 hour worth of testing into the new browser so far. As I get time I will run it through some more paces.

Clarification: OPERA does NOT use the same engine as IE; it uses it's own built-from-the-ground-up engine.

Mozilla does NOT use the Netscape engine, rather, since Nutscrape version 7, NS has used MOZILLA's engine.

It's curious that this is occuring for you, because like you, I bought my 8887 when they first came out, prior to HT, and applied all the bios updates and what-not, and haven't seen this problem...

Myrkat, what I read on sites as I was looking it up said that Opera used the same engine as IE. Whether it does or not, the one drop down menu had the selection marked to say to identify it as IE.

As far as the Netscape / Mozilla thing, either way they are using the same engine. I was writing a quick forum message, not preparing a brief for a court case.

After I flashed the BIOS I did the repair to WinXP, as Beeb had given details on at the time, instead of the full reinstall. I am thinking that it is possible that IE would have been installed differently with the HT enabled than it was without it. I don't know every file it installs.

I ordered the 8887 with XP so it came installed. The hard drive was not partitioned as it came. I should have reinstalled it and partitioned it immediately when I got it, but I didn't. Several of my security programs that I run are downloaded from the web and I made the mistake of not ordering a cd with them. This creates a problem for me of backing up all of my software and getting it reinstalled without having to pay for it again if I do the reinstall and wipe it all out. I have done the initial installation on many computers, but so far I haven't ever had to do a complete reinstall until now. I downloaded the MS Backup program, but since I haven't ever had to use it, I am uncertain if it will work under these circumstances. Any recommendations you might have I would be happy to listen to.

So far I now have about 3 hrs into Mozilla without any lockups. I have been hitting a lot of sites that have caused me problems in the past.

That is just an identifier. Mozilla has that as well (some websites will work with Mozilla/Phoenix/Opera, but check to see if IE is the browser... this way, you can fool them and still see the site.

OK, you got me... I was being anal, as always...

When I enabled mine, I did a reinstall - you may be on to something here...

I would manually copy/burn-to-disc the files you can recover (actually, I use an external firewire drive, but same idea). MS Backup is OK, but I'd do the manual route... about the D/L'd software, did you print out your receipt and reg. number? Most all places have a way to re-download the program again... I hope you have that info in HARD COPY...

Good to hear it! Like I've said before, once you get used to it (or any browser) it's really nice.

patch 811493 looks like the culprit
Myrkat, thanks for the suggestions. My current thoughts are as follows. I have been eyeing the 80 gig hard drive on PC Torque's website. I may order it and do a fresh install on it and try the backup with it. That way I can re-do it and not lose anything if I screw it up. I also have a firewire external hard drive and can use it for the backup.

Setim, thanks for the info. I'm sure that patch is causing some problems for some people, but I don't think it has been contributing to this one. This problem started in late Februrary when I updated the BIOS and the patch didn't come out until early April.
