New video iPod, new iMacs

New video iPod and iMacs are out. The new iPod allows for video playback, and iTunes now allows you to buy music videos, tv shows, and short movies (maybe full movies too? I saw a Pixar film of some sort on there). Very cool. Looks like current gen iPod, but a little thinner. Also available in black.

New iMac is slightly thinner than current gen, sports iPod shuffle-like remote, built in iSight, and new software- PhotoBooth and a remote software for watching movies, videos, and listening to music and whatnot. Looks very cool. I want one, bad- anyone wanna buy a mac mini?

Its pretty cool, I like the new 20" Imac. I couldn't buy one of the Pixar shorts on the Itunes store UK though...

Yeah, the new ipod video and imacs look nice. Getting more for your money now, except that I have to buy a new iPod every couple of months because they keep releasing new products. I am actually glad that they didn't upgrade the resolution on the powerbooks or else I would have really been in debt. Now I am waiting for the video of the conference to appear online so I can see the unveiling of the new products. Plus, Steve Jobs rocks!!!

I cant imagine what part of market will now apple have 9/10 ????
I;m definatelly gonna support apple

cool looking, but the 2.5" display is smaller than other video players. price isn't bad though, and it's smaller in size than some of the 'mobile' 3.5 or 4" screen players. will definitely do well.

how many years did it take them to figure out the video thing? i've been enjoying videos on my iriver for almost a year now

now that aside, hey, at least they are improving, which is good, but there is plenty more room to grow.

the imacs are craptastic imo. they were the best when they looked like a screen on top of a pod via a metalic arm.
maybe they already figured it out, but took there time to make the most profit. Why do you even come on the Apple part of the forums if you just bash them??? I never understood that. Anyway, the event is now streamable (?) on Apple's homepage on the bottom. Just thought I'd let those who want to see it know. The quality isn't fantastic though.

ekhmmmm.... is it the iriver with the screen like 1' or 1,5' Yes my friend has one of those and i'm telling u - the video playback on such a thing is just amazing!!!! All u can see is crap ....but who cares the iriver playes the video and even has the picture option available that resize any picture to the screen size, and again what u can see???? NOTHING ..... but .... iriver was first to be able to store pictures ..... hmmmmm ..... i wonder how many years will it take for u to be more mature and not only critisize one brand becouse of your unknown resons that for sure are of high quality

actually the iriver has a screen that is just as large as the ipod (you are thinking of the new iriver h10). the video playback is just fine, and the pictures are viewable in over 250,000 colors. if i am not mistaken the ipod screen is only 64,000 colors.

so yeah.... don't bash one brand without knowning its products.

and i don't bash apple, i do like some of their products that i think are pretty cool, but frankly the ipod or the imac is not one of them.

My friend has an iriver with 20gb Hd and is in the size of the normal ipod ..... the screen even if it is able to produce more colors is much smaller then the screen in the 4th generation of ipods and not even compare to the new ones Really in my opinion the iriver with the video playback option was nothing special ok there was the ability of watching movies but it was terrible I've asked my freind why didnt he buy ipod and the answer was becouse its apple and does not play videos and could not be read as normal HD .... well... i think u must be a relative or just the same frequencies of your brain but i just want to sey: "enjoy your super playback on your iriver while (if i'll get the money) i will enjoy my video playback on new apple

....see.... my point is i can enjoy it NOW! and i really do mean NOW! (for like a year NOW) not just NOW as in TODAY of what you get from apple, you know. and yeah, i will stick to my iriver, hell, if the H10 didn't suck i would make sure my next player was an iRiver too, now i might consider replacing my iriver with an Achros or something

hell, even this does the job: http://www.techdesign.be/projects/020/020.htm plus it has that cool "build it yourself" thing going for it.

Come on man, what are you fighting for? There's only you who have been keeping up with the iriver for the last few posts. I don't think you have a single chance to win this debate in an Apple forum though.
We're all consumer. We pay for the product. --> trust me, the Ipod is expensive and if Ipod is actually worse than iriver then you would have seen iriver all over the place rather than the ipod for a long time ago.

-- I love the new Ipod (even though IMO, there's plenty of room for the screen improvement) I hope there'll a upgrade coming soon that enables Ipod to play wma.

ha see thats what i meant i dont care if u can "enjoy" the video on your iriver as probably the word "enjoy" means two different things for us
Ok .... yes u are right the iriver was the first one to introduce the video playback but i'm telling u once again i'm not 10 years old to watch and ENJOY the video on 1' screen !!!! YES .... i;m not making this stuff up as i have already told u that i had a chance to play with the iriver and i didnt enjoy the playback at all What's more if people really needed the video playback on their mp3 players nobody will bought the ipod and as far as i know apple controls 3/4 of the market of mp3 players

you know why you see ipods everywhere.... MARKETING and MASS MEDIA! something iriver doesn't do, except for some select magazine ads

Our woman in the field, Nicole, offers this pithy review:

The screen is gorgeous. Its wider than previous models and overall it feels slim and lightweight. Quicktime 7.03 is necessary to view video, which is great, along with response time. It’s good enough to watch an entire movie on it.

Battery life: 20 hours for music, 5 hours for photos, and 2-3 hours for video, more or less—depending on model.

So, we’ve got ourselves a new iPod. It’s not quite the iPod Video, but it’s pretty close. Let’s look at the specs:

The new iPod is has 4x3 screen, 320x240 pixels and 260,000 colors and does realtime decoding of MPEG4 and H.264 at 30fps. It has video out.
VGA is 480x720, but this is widescreen, which makes it better for video. The resolution is just about half-VGA, which is just about what all the other players in this market are hitting, so we’re not entering any new territory here. However, what we have here is a MASSIVE install base. Apple currently has over 84% market share in the MP3 player space. Everyone wants a piece of that pie, and as we well know, millions of OEMs have already attacked the idea of a portable video player with reckless abandon, creating a wasteland of formats, sizes, and devices. Hell, the PSP can play video.

What’s going to happen now? You’re going to go buy one. Your mom is going to buy one. Your grandma is getting one. And downloadable video will become as commonplace as downloadable music. And Apple will win in this space, as well.

So let’s see what we’re up against: $399 for a 60GB iPod to update the 40GB we already own. The uptake on this new device will be rather slow. There will be an attack, at first, with millions of units sold. Then Joe Sixpack will drop his iPod on the treadmill and get a new one and be amazed that he can now watch lost. Then Jane WineCooler will look at the Nano and then iPod and figure that maybe she can download some movies from ThePirateBay. Then Creative and Microsoft and all the other boys who ALREADY HAVE MEDIA PLAYERS will try to corner a few studios, much to their folly.

Expect a massive shake-up in the DVD world, as well. Downloadable content with easy video out, a hot little remote control, and a sense of moral superiority will hit NetFlix in the nuts, not even mentioning the deathblow this delivers to Blockbuster.
see, the specification for the new Ipod? I don't think it's any where behind Iriver (not just talk about the fact it's better).

I think there's something wrong with this article :lol Anyways, just take it as a yes for Ipod is better than Iriver (i still like the smallest version of Iriver though:P)

What version of the iRiver are you using. I have the H10 5gig version and I was wondering if there was a hack such that it could play video.

Well, then iriver is pretty stupid. The way I see it is that apple owns 84% of the mp3 market, while iriver has a part of the remaining 16% (according to the article listed above). So, good luck with that.

While the new iPod isn't perfect, it is pretty nice. I wish that they went with a widescreen display, and also made it larger to provide longer battery life. Only 2 hours of video playback isn't that much. A revision is probably in place.
