OT: CHKDSK Doesn't Work

Hey all,

I have a 9880 with WIN XP Pro installed. Tonight when I booted it up I was surprised that CHKDSK startred on on the C drive.

It only gets 61% complete and then it stops, left if for over an hour, doesn't go past 61%.

I did manage to boot it into Safe Mode, then I booted it normally in "regular mode) by passing the CHKDSK request.

When it booted up (took over 14 min) I was getting an error message about a particular directory that may be corrpt and was told to run a CHKDSK (can't do that cuz it won't go past 61%)

Can anyone offer any suggestions as to how to fix this issue?

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

You may wish to run check Disk in Repair mode (may take a long time to run)

CHKDSK C: /r

If the chkdsk utility reports bad or unreadable sectors then you have a damaged hard drive. If you know the brand name for the hard drive you may also wish to access its manufacturer's web/ftp site and download a suitable hard drive test/diagnostics utility.

If the results of the above are consistent then you've got a potential hard drive RMA on your hands.

Best Regards;

MS

Yeah follow msantos's advice. /r. Oh and boot to a dos prompt first. If that fails, check out HD manufacturer's site for diag utils, you should be able to determine this yourself before making any phone calls and jumping to conclusions. No one has suggested and I have never checked, but occasionally bios utils exist to perform a diag.

If indeed you do have faulty hardware and you care about your data (otherwise I'm not suggesting throwing money at the problem), you can give spinrite a shot (www.grc.com).

Thanks for the tips...

I did the /R and as predicited, it did take some time. It did find a few fragmented files that it fixed and or deleted and then after that all seemed okay. It did boot up just fine.

I did run the manufacture disk util's on the dirve, and it passed with flying colors.

So, I assume I did have a corrupt file, /R fixed it and all is well.

I will be doing daily back up's for some time just to be sure though.

Thanks again!
