want to impress a guy but also want a good lappy

Okay, here's the deal. I want to buy a laptop and I want one that gets the most bang for my buck (USD). Basically, I want to impress a certain guy (he's a comp sci major, so don't fail me people!) But i want the following features:

Good quality-good name
Reliable
At least xp home
wifi if possible (but willing to sacrifice it)
Pentium M
The usual stuff...I'm thinking about this one:
http://www-131.ibm.com/webapp/wcs/st...Number=1842QFU but its a little out of my price range.

I am an accounting and comp sci major (first year)-so this needs to last me all four years. I want the best my money can buy, but I want the price to be below $800. If you have any suggestions, that would be great!

not really. I just want the best laptop for my money. I thought it would be a good attention getter. But the guy i'm referring to is real

Best I can kind find is the Acer Travelmate 2410. It's got everything you need, except a Celeron-M instead of a P-M. TBH, I doubt you will be able to find a new Pentium-M machine for under $800. However, I did find THIS , which had a one-day sale for $100 off (though it just ended).

If you can stretch your budget a little, you can get quite a bit more in a machine. I would try to squeeze every last drop you have for something that has to last 4 years of school...

Asus can usually provide some VERY nice computers, but they can get a little pricey.

lol, this is a weird situation though. Usually guys try to impress the girl with something flashy

I've somewhat recently finished my accounting and finance degree. If your cirriculum is anything like mine was, you'll be working with a lot of excel spreadsheets (more and more as you get into upper division classes) and you'll want as much monitor as possible. 17" widescreen isn't overkill at all. That's my biggest piece of advice.

Since you are on a limited budget, forget about IBM. They are a premium brand meaning less bang for buck. Check with your school and see if they have a student discount program. Many have contracts with Dell. You might be able to pick up an Inspiron 9300 on the cheap.

for this price , the best advice you can get here is :

1. to keep on eye on www.newegg.com , somtimes they do have realy good deals , and you can find somthing fancy over there ...

2.theres a section here that you can get "dell's" cupons wich can give you a good discount ... http://www.notebookforums.com/forumdisplay.php?f=104

other then that , keep saving money ... good luck with your guy ...

thanks for the well wishes nemesys! I go to a small, private college so we don't get the discounts like IU and the others. So going with booger (that just sounds wierd), i like the 17" idea. so add that to the list. any new suggestions on specific models or brands. I really have heard bad things about dells, so i am kinda shying away from those.

also... i am not going to be lugging it around campus. so weight does not matter

Asus's A6U starts in the 700s, its a good buy =P 15.4 though, not 17

Check it out anyway. My uncle works at a tiny community college in Idaho and I know they have a couple contracts. I'm pretty sure Dell extends discounts to every educational institution.

i don't have to have a 17" though....it seems pretty hard to find them in my price range with the features i want. do i really need a pentium m? i don't game, but like i said this is going to last four years. also, not planning to watch movies on it.

yea me to , i dont like dell , i dont know why , i just dont like them ...

i dont realy think that 17" will be good for college, its too big ... you dont need desktop replacment ... why not getting 15 wide-screen so you could work on excel and word easy and still be portable ...

this can be nice , and its cheap also ...

Personal preference. The majority of finance and accounting students with laptops at my school preferred 17's. Desktop replacement became a neccessity as you really can't coordinate the never-ending group projects with the use of 1 desktop in a dorm room. Everyone meets in the lie-barry and gets to work. Sometimes all day. The extra real estate was a big deal. Just an opinion.

Go see what everyone else uses. Ask around. Maybe you don't need one at all. $900 will buy you a very nice desktop as opposed to a marginal laptop.

nemesys-i like the first one! the second is a bit too pricey. I don't know if my parents will even let me spend the 840 + 7 shipping. But its my money so lets see... we don't have a lot of group work... i can see why it was handy though. thanks for the suggestion. I don't really have a preference i guess about widescreen or not, or the size of the screen for that matter. Just as long as it is 15" minimum.

The 2nd one is awesome bang-for-buck at that price range.

I get my paycheck tomorrow, so maybe i could get the second one...Your totally right though. The specs are amazing for that price. Is there a way to get a coupon or find a lower price (but still have reliable service?) Any other models that i need to consider first before i drop the $955?
look indianagurl ...

theres no end to laptops and deals and prices , you can keep going crazy looking for the perfect one for that price ... theres allways going to be a better one , and in a month you could find a better deal for sure , but you want to keep looking all the time ???
theres allways somthing new , and theres allways price drops ...

if it fits your needs, and you got the money - go for it .

otherwise youll be searching ... and searching .... and ... you got the point ...

Go for it, even if there's a better deal in a few months--that's a few months.

I bought mine on a whim and I thought there may be better deals--but nothing compares, even though there are supposedly better deals on other makes.

I hope you feel the same way, and I hope you're happy with your purchase as I am with mine.
