Sound disappeared from XPS2...

Thread Starter
For some strange reason, I can't get any sound out from the XPS2 speakers. It works through headphones and external speakers but not the built in speakers.

I have clicked on the mixer to ensure that nothing is muted and tried every option in the advanced audio list (laptop speakers, 5.1 speakers, desktop speakers etc etc) but nothing.

It all seems to stem from when I hooked it up to my TV for the first time, and used the TV to control the volume.

No conflicts or errors in device manager neither - any ideas guys?

Hope you can help, Many thanks

try reinstalling the audio driver

Could be your soundcard. Mine crapped out recently. Dell replaced my mobo to fix the problem.

Yea, I have had quite a lot of audio problems with my 9300 as well. POS keeps on dying every couple of weeks and I have to reinstall the audio drivers.

I had the same problem.
The sound completely dissapeared from my XPS-2!

The fan noise, the noise of the harddisk.
I could hear everything just fine!

And then I plugged in my Shure E3 in-ears and gone was all the sound!

No but seriously dude.
This sounds like hardware.
It's the hardware that switches the speakers off when it senses a headphone jack being plugged in, not the driver or mixing panel from Windows.
So if it works with headphone and not without... it's hardware.
Trust me.

I contributed to the problem. I almost dropped my 9300. Came down on one of the corners pretty hard. Sound died instantly (I was listening to XM online at the time). Couldn't get it back no matter what I tried including the Dell diagnostics.

Completecare rocks.

Faeries aren't real, just like Elves and Eskimos.

I had the same problem. Try inserting your head phone jack slightly (not all the way) into the XPS and moving it/rocking it back and forth (while playing music) and see if the sound comes back. It worked on mine (at least temporarily). You'll eventually have to get the motherboard replaced as Dell still attaches the sound devices directly to the motherboard. I finally got tired of doing this workaround, and get mine replaced tomorrow.

Did you try dropping it on the opposite corner from the same height to see if this adjust it back to place?
