Ever's Alienware Area-51m Review

Ok, I've been a member here now for just a little bit. I orderd my laptop on Oct.3. Recieved it on Nov.26th. My dvd r/w was backordered a week or so after my order. I used the Alienware credit card option...no finance for 6mos. That took forever via snail-mail. AW sends application for you to fill it out and send back. They then charge your new account and send a receipt for you to sign then send back. That whole ordeal takes about 10 days. My phases then moved up...very slowly.

I powerd my machine up for the first time and was like wow, THIS IS FAST. You can check out my desktop in my sig. My screen was bright, but I wouldn't call it washed out. I changed some settings around with gamma, brightness, and contrast. All is now super fine. I did have to update to latest vid drivers because after hibernate it awoke to a lower screen res or just rebooted. Vid drivers fixed it.

After loading Tweak UI from MS and customizing all my settings, I loaded Halo, Medal of Honor AA, MoH:spearhead, MoH:breakthrough, Norton system 2003, Unreal 2003 and Everquest.

Halo at max resolution 1600x1200 gives me sound flaws- sounds like the audio can't keep up with all the sounds going on so you hear breaking and scratching noises. I fixed the problem by playing in 1024x768. The game rocks and now no more sound problems. I did notice that under the audio setting Hardware Acceleration, I can't change it to on. Someone replied to me that it is because the sound is onboard, but my Nvidia mobo on my desk is the samething, sound onboard, and Hardware Acceleration is enabled, plus EAX audio is also on. I downloaded latest drivers from SIS, C-Media, and finally Alienware. All with the same results.

Medal of Honor Allied Assualt is the only problem game out of all the MoH. The problem is that when the auto config program runs when the game is first installed the auto config crashes. I figured out a way after some tinkering around. In the start menu, in the ea games folder there is an Easyinfo icon. When the program is run it detects my 3ghz proc as -1296??? What's up with that. So all of the video settings within the game had to be manually set, and some of them won't let me select highest settings w/o crashing. Basicly everything is maxed out including the res. The other 2 MoH are all maxed and run super sweet!!!

Unreal 2003 was installed then immediately updated to v2225. The game runs super, all maxed out!!! and the sound let's me enable Hardware Acceleration with EAX!!!! wierd!

My favorite out of all the games is Everquest. This game looks and runs so freakin' good!!! My monitor on my desktop has a high resolution of 1024x768 so to see my fav game at 1600x1200 is unbeliveable. The game did crash once to my desktop, all the while dumping down to 16 color mode in 800x600 and gave me some silly error saying that my vid card caused a fault. I have played the game total about 8hrs thus far and it only happend once, we'll see what happens.

SO this is my review of the games that I play. This laptop rocks!!!! I love it so much...shhh don't let my wife know I said that...

The dvd r/w is awesome too... I have never owned one so I have nothing to compare to. I use smartripper to backup my dvds onto my harddrive then use easyencode to convert to divx. I have done 5 of my favorite movies so far flawlessly!! I have then burned the movies onto a dvd-r, sweet 5 movies of super quality I can take on 1 disc.

I have also downloaded trialware of Powerstrip 3.47 a few days ago so I can hotkey all of my games diff settings. It's really cool just hitting a Ctl-Alt-(whatever key) to my fav setting depending if I'm playing in the dark or daylight once set it's really easy to do.

Well, overall I love this thing!!! The problems are all minor and I work around them effortlessly. If anyone has any questions please feel free to ask. IMHO this is one serious game machine that kicks butt. My friends are all envious cause they lug their systems around to LAN and I just roll up with my AW, not to mention the good looks!!!

Nice review! And congrats on the machine and being happy with it after the waiting and what-not. Good things do come to those that wait, more often than not.

hey sent ol ever brought ut2k3 and i want to play this so bad i posted this earlier havent got a response so you can see all my stats in my sig and the rest of my software if you see anything different let me know! i can't get the darn ut2k3 to get past the splash screen and i just installed black & white it shows the splash screen and then poof nothing the splash screen just disapears.... sigh. but jk2 runs like a bat out of hell. anyways read on

Ok so i got the ol' area51 today and installed ut2k3 on it, let me first start off by saying before i patched ut2k3 after the fresh plain retail install i got a device failure or some crap error, so i went and downloaded the latest ut2k3 patch v2225 and the newest dx9 off ms's site but now i get a full blank/black screen after the ut2k3 splash screen and i have to power off/power on to get my lappie back up....

and yes I downloaded the latest ati 7.95? drivers from the link that m42 posted to alienwares ftp site. I don't see what else could be the problem?

someone please help me get this game running, so far the q3demo that came installed runs and so does my retail patched copy of jedi knight 2 jedi outcast.

and gawd damn does anyone have the ultimate gamma/brightness/contrast settings or should i use powerstrip and does anyone have the best settings for that? or the adobe gamma and best settings? maybe someone should compile these, anyways let me know PLEASE, thanks.

ARGGGGG

I'm also in the process of doing a format and reinstall i also tried the drivers that came with it before i upgraded still no dice... quake 3 demo also ran....

Let me throw in a few comments here:

First off I too played UT2k last night for the first time. The game looked great once I tweaked "in-game" settings in conjunction with "Powerstrip Desktop" setups. That means that I had to set my desktop to a different color setup IF I wanted UT2k to look as good as it could. But man 'O man did it look SWEET!

Secondly I did have several crashes while playing the game. Mostly General Protection Faults.

Here are the current Power Strip Color settings I'm using:

For a Nice looking desktop using Powerstrip Color management :

Gamma: .71
Brightness: -20%
Contrast: -120%
Temperature: RGB - 6000k & CMY - 6000k

Powerstrip setting for a good looking for Unreal 2k:

Gamma: .71
Brightness: 30%
Contrast: -120%
Temp: Same (6000k)

Then launch UT2k and do this:
In Game Unreal Tournament 2k Settings:

Gamma: .69
Brightness: .71
Contrast: .76 And of course, always Save your profiles in Powerstrip like "UT2K" or "Sweet Desktop" or "Counter-Strike", ect...that way you'll always have the best looking game AND total recall on your saved sweetness!

Hope that helps because to my tired eyes, it looks amazing at 1600x1200!

Thanks for the info craig but I can't even get ut2k3 to start up, it goes splash screen, then like it's going into full mode and just goes into a full black screen and will sit there until i reboot with the power button.. lol.. I'm still working on it i know it can't be a hardware problem jk2 runs fine maxed out.... so did the quake demo.

Hey Craig, I wonder why your game crashes, is it overheating? Does it happen right away or is it totaly random?

I have played from a full battery to complete deadness. I have all of that powerstep or whatever it's call completely OFF. That's all hogwash LOL

Craig, did you update your vid card drivers to 7.95? You won't have to adjust the color settings if you do.(or at least on mine)

My machine came with 7.95 drivers...I still had to do a bit of tweaking.

Not Powerstep, PowerSTRIP or AlienAdrenaline. If you don't have it, download it for free if not for Over Clocking then for the advanced Color management it has.

I got ut2k3 to run and man does it look sweeet... but... if i look up into the sky for example on dm-antalus and move around the sky and trees edges kind of merge for a second like a ghosting/trailing effect slow refreshing effect. I just formatted and am not used to non tube displays is this supposed to happen? if I look at the ground and move it doesn't happen. It's pretty much on games when i'm outside it does it in jk2 also.

I'm running the new ati drivers 7.95's and dx9 and have recently reformatted, am I missing a setting or something?

this display looks to sweet to have a trailing/minor refreshing effect??? is there a driver for this display or something? under advanced it just is the default XP one at 60hertz? 1600x1200 I don't see anything on the pages and discs? What am I doing wrong?

If you are refering to a bit of "ghosting" that occurs when you look around very fast, Yes, that is inherent to an LCD monitor. I am feeling the same effects as you are as I've been on a CRT for years (gaming that is) and am still adjusting to the LCD at 75 fps

Did those UT2k Settings I'm using help at all?

UPDATE: Ever, I just played UT2K for over an hour and not one crash tonight.

Not that I'm complaining but I thought I'd upate you. The only tweaking I've done today was with the Color settings in Powerstrip. Oh well

Yeah I guess it is do ghosting then, darn my first time touching an lcd or using a computer besides a crt. I thought by now though lcds wouldn't have done that even though it's very minor and still is emazing.

As far as the settings go I havent tried them yet I just got done installing those omega radeon drivers someone listed. So far 10mins so good.

hey Ever

I ordered my Area51 the other day and also got the DVD-RW. Now I've never burned DVD's before. Can you give me a review of the burner.
Here's some questions
1. How long does it take to burn a movie?
2. Does it use + or - DVD's
3. What burning software does it come with?
4. Is it easy to use?
5.Does the software come with decoders because DVD's come encryped(sp??)
6. You said something about fitting 5 movies on one DVD, can you give more detail about that? From what I got from you you said that you can fit 5 full whole movies on a single DVD?
Any other infomation would be great thanks... Need to know If I need to get DVD X(from best buy) to burn my fav. movies
post #19 of 27
Did a bit more testing last night and am only getting ghosting or noticing it so far on 2 maps, I think it might not be ghosting but a color problem.

The only two maps out of the ones I got to try last night in two games were dm-antalus in ut2k3 the pink/cream moving sky causes a ghosting off the trees or anything in the foreground. So far i've yet to see any other ut2k3 maps do this.

Also oddly enough it does it minorly also on bespin streets in JK2 wich has a pinkish/creamish sky. Other than that the little time I got to play last night it looked emazing and craig i'm gonna try those color settings when I get a chance.

Anyone else with ut2k3 and the ati can check dm-antalus kind of go to instant action 0 bots, play. Get in the map and look up at the sky and move your viewing around and see if you get any of the sky background ghosting/mergin with the foreground objects/anything. Again in dm-antalus unless the background has the pinkish sky in it, objects(trees, rock, the big pillers in the middle) in the foreground. I don't get a pinkish outline ghosting effect.

Anyways let me know, thanks.

1. I haven't copied a movie per se dvd to dvd so I can't tell ya, but I did back up my hard drive using Drive Image and it took approx 2 hrs onto 2 dvds. That has maximum compression on while backing up the hard drive.

2. DVD -r and -rw

3. It comes with Nero 6.0.0.16

4. I love Nero and I find it easy to use.....kinda straight foward I think

5. NO DECODERS from Alienware, they are illegal unless your backing up your own movies

6. Ok 1 DVD holds 4.7 GB or 4700mb so I use some software from here to make compressed movie files in a format called DIVX. each movie is about 700-900mb. So I can burn about 5 DIVX movies onto one DVD. Mind you that DVIX movies will only play on a computer with the proper codec.

Here are a few links for ya:
HOW TO
Don't use the DIVX from above instead use this one.
DIVX

Rember only make DIVX of movies that you own...You own them so you can legally back them up(i think)....
