Why do you have an Asus? - Page 3

Well, if you looking to do it on the cheap, then your either going to have to get a kustom (built on asus) or some other oem brand. The brand names are more expensive, but your paying for build quality, peice of mind and aesthetics. The built on asus models arent as visually appealing and also dont have the external build quality of the W and V range asus models, but you can custom the internals to whatever specs you want.

The laptop market is so competitive that its hard to go by brand. You need to find out what you need it for, then pick a brand and model based on those preferences, totally unbiased towards a particular brand. If a quality warranty is an issue to you like it was to me, you'll end up paying for it.

Sounds to me that you'll need to go OEM. And in that case, go with Built on ASUS models... Ie the Z70 and Z71 range.

Good luck

Btw, I dont know what the reception is like on my room mates tuner, I have never actually watched it. He just tells me about it from time to time

So, in conclusion...

Brand type - W or V series ASUS
Non brand - Z series ASUS.

Am I biased?

I actually think that the M6 design looks really professional, I don't have anything against the W or V though. And I wouldn't say built-on's quality isnt as good, my z70v has virtually zero flex (i can pick it up from a corner without it creaking or feeling weak) and the screen is the best matte i've seen. For me it was mainly price, built-on is much cheaper, especially if you know how to install ram, hd, etc.

I wanted something with nice styling. Even the cheapest laptop on the market is what I would consider an expensive purchase, and I'm a firm believer that if I'm going to shell out big dollars on something it's worth it to spend a little more and get something I'm *truly* happy with.

Dell and HP: Usually ugly, and I've had quality issues with them in the past at my jobs, so I didn't even look at their models.
Gateway: Didn't even really consider these guys. They scream "cheap" to me. Seems like a brand that competes solely on price and providing a friendly image to "soccer moms".
Sony: I love the styling on Sony laptops, but I've heard many negative things about them over the years. I *might* have considered one, but they had one strike against them in my book.
Toshibas: I would have seriously considered a Toshiba. My ex-gf had a Toshiba and it was a great machine. I think they have nice styling, too.

I was pretty neutral about other brands like Acer. Didn't know much about them.

When it came time for my purchase I searched NewEgg for laptops that met my requirements and the W3V was the only one that fit. I didn't know much about ASUS laptops but I've been a fan of ther motherboards for ages. I did my research online and read a lot of positive things about ASUS' quality so I went ahead and made the purchase after several weeks of looking at what felt like every laptop on Earth.

The fact that ASUS manufactures Powerbooks for Apple was also a plus in my book.

Am I happy with the purchase? I have a few small issues with my ASUS (vertical viewing angle on screen, poor headphone output) but I learned about them on forums ahead of time and overall I'm very happy with my purchase.

they do have usb tv tuners, so u can always get one of those if u want a tv tuner on ur laptop. good thing about the usb tuners is u can always plug it into a different desktop/laptop. personally tho, i have a pci tv tuner in my desktop and it works great, saves space in the dorm so i dont have to bring in another tv. if u have a desktop i'd recommend putting a tv tuner in that and not worry about getting a tv tuner for a laptop cuz its cheaper and when u're on the go u're really not going to be able to find an open cable outlet.

I dont know if i would consider 1500 cheap for what im going to use it as. I KNOW i could get a dell machine for 1500 only thing i heard bad things about their build quality and would like a laptop that is "built to last" and heard asus' were. as someone said dells r usually ugly.. i agree. so are a bunch of other brands notebooks. if im going to dish out hundreds or thousands on a laptop i want one that looks appealing to me. not one i find ugly. but at the same time i dont want to get one that looks good but has fauly performance(eg sony vaios)

but thanks for the info on asus vs built on asus models!!

not too sure if im going to go for an asus anymore. cant really find ond that i feel fits my needs right now. but the longer i take to find a laptop..the more money i'll have. so maybe i'll end up getting an asus model like the w2. i dont know.

but i am also am still looking at other models..gonna head off to toshiba.com and check out some things.

ok so i if i have a laptop with a tv tuner in it(or external)

or a HDTV .. i have to have these hooked up to a cable? is that what you mean by your last sentence?

if so then whats the use. i thought a cable plug was not needed on the HDTV monitor or computer capable of viewing hdtv

How long do these things typically last?

I'm looking to use it for a good 3 years...another reason i dont want an ugly laptop.

I just havent heard from anyone who records with asus. ive heard of recording with apple, dell, toshiba, and a lil sager but not much....... *edit* wow nevermind..just checked back the recording board and searched for asus and came up with tons of pages...must of mispelled "asus" last night when i tried. most of these ppl seem to be using asus motherboards tho..on desktops..not asus notebooks. non the less

hm hm hm. apple- im not a mac user

dell- fugly

toshiba- alright..lookin into it.

sager- looked into it then went on the sager forums here and heard too many stories of HD crashing, etc no thanks

My regular computer store back home recommended it... I ordered a Shuttle SN95G5 from him last year. I read online and splurged.

I got a V6V... best complete notebook package I've ever seen. Style, portability and power combine along with what Asus has been known for, good hardware.

I think there is an ASUS model that fits nearly every category including multi-media. Dont just research for music, research for video editing aswell. Amounts to the same thing in the computer world.

As I said, V or W series. What you need is... CPU, RAM, Video Card... And also screen for video, or just if you want pleasure while using it .... Oh and Aesthetics if you want to get da women...

Good hunting my friend.

Everyone that has an asus is happy with their purchase... specially V or W (or Z ... cheapos )

If you want cable feed HDTV you need cable STB (prolly) and a cable into notebook tuner. If you want satellite HDTV you need satellite STB (definitely) and a cable into notebook tuner. If you want OTA HDTV you need antenna and a cable into notebook tuner.
Soon (hopefully), there will be wireless options.

Also, I recall someone saying some time ago that many people were using Asus Z71's for music applications. Can't recall if they were talking DJing or recording or both. Sorry for the poor memory.

rofl @ z..cheapos.

I dont know... Gaah I have to sell my drumset anyway before i will even have the cash for the laptop. Should be failry easy to sell

But.... I just dont know. With about the same spcs in another brand..it seems i can get it for cheaper than the asus

but the same brand doesnt seem to have the build quality as an asus.

and the build quality it seems asus has is why i am trying to lean towards it..but at the same time want to some specs that fits me. so maybe i will find one in asus land. if not well then..i just do not know!

but i think i said it in here.. i found that a good amount of ppl into audio recording are using asus motherboards.

I got my m5n because i wanted a centrino with a 12.1" screen. Dells were unappealing, HP's stink, Fujitsu's are expensive, same with Toshibas, Sager is crappy, MSI wasn't out yet, Averatec didn't have a 12.1" centrino, and I trusted the ASUS name. They also made some apple notebooks, so I thought, hey, why not. I'm very pleased with it. People ask me "what kind of computer is that?" And I reply, "I don't know how to pronounce it, but it's AY-soos".

Oh, and on the music stuff, I have an external USB soundcard on mine and the performance is great. I have 768mb of ram. I get some dropouts when I run some weird stuff that accesses the system bus, but for the most part, it's rock solid. If you're going to connect to an amplifier, or grounded mixer, you'll need an ungrounded power supply (two prongs, no safety ground) because of the ground loops. That'll run you about 40. That is all.

EDIT: oh yeah, onboard sound is pretty crappy (like every other computer I've ever heard). It's good for just traveling, but if you're at home, and want to hook it up to an amp, go through an external or PCMCIA sound card. my 2 cents.
