Whatever man, have fun with your 128 meg card, I paid $1634 for the specs in my sig and I scooped mine up off I-40 the other day and it's still a beast so you can take Dell build quality statements and talk to someone other than me or the corporations that use Dell exclusively for their equipment.

$1,822 an abomination with a $200 upgraded card? Are you aware that the box you linked to has a 4200rpm HD drive and a generation and a half older GPU? Sowhat if it's $2099 CDN, he's in the US right now. I look at the US site an it tuns out all you can get is either a 128MB x600 or integrates graphics. The 6800 will blow this card away. Also when I got the specs up to the Dell I posted before, the cost is $1799 so the abomination is $23.20 more (once again, without a coupon- with one you could get this box ~$1500 from Dell) and has a higher res, faster HDD, and a kick ass GPU.

Good luck to the OP. I'm done with this conversation.

You Dell guys* get so touchy. It makes me laugh. You're as bad as some of the Mac nerds at my school. "My computer's smarter," one told me.

Heh.

Yep, a slower hard drive. That's right. So what? When I switch it it'll be for a 7200RPM 160 or whatever the hell they come out with next year. That's why I didn't give a damn about the speed.

Oh, and boo freakin' hoo that I can't play at 1600x1000 or whatever that is. I'm weeping, really.

Not.

I paid 1699 Canadian, not the website's price. Don't pretend like you had me figured out, 'cause you didn't. I stand by all I said and I believe my unit will outclass yours in any area, save for 3D Mark scores. But hey, if the initial poster--or whoever else is choosing a computer based on this thread--only cares about 3D Mark, they can go get the same kind of crap service I got with Dell when I tried one of their computers last summer. But they'll regret it--and pay for the shipping now too, unlike I did.

But I won't be the one weeping.

To me, the price is part of the greatess of a laptop. If I spent 3 Canadian Gs on this I wouldn't be ecstatic... but I didn't. It's all about balance, and mine's got more than that Dell ever did.

With all this confusion, and the expensive prices for a solid gaming laptop, I'm seriously considering get a desktop.
good idea

Yeah man, if portability isn't a factor, then a desktop is your best choice.

Getting a laptop for gaming is like painting yourself in a corner. You can have the badest machine in the whole world but when it comes time to upgrade you're still ****ed. Say what you want but at this time there is no such thing as an easily upgradeable laptop as far as graphics are concerned. The manufacturors are getting there but they're still a ways off.
If I were you I'd build a $1000 dollar gaming machine that will easily rival the i9300 and buy something ultraportable for school.

I think this is absolutely true. Back to the age-old question of, "Who plays games on a laptop?" Heh.

That's precisely what I think some people are missing. They get those cards and so on, pay the extra money, but in the end they could have just bought a desktop for a grand and saved us all a lot of arguing while getting better futureproofing through the ease of upgrades.

Well said, DP. Well said.

To get a gaming desktop for $1000, I'd have to custom build it huh?

Yeah, most pre-assembled units for that price are poorly made and give you much crap you don't need and not enough of a value.

You shop around, you get the best deal.

Post your findings on a forum like this one and people will help you.

Will do, thanks. If you have any advice or suggestions let me know.

Oh, I found this site:

http://www.digitalstormonline.com/index.htm

They appear to have some good prices. I'll still need to find a monitor. They have tabs on the left side where you can pick gaming PC, workstations, or Desktop PC.

My initial suggestion is to not undermine the importance of a power supply--get real familiar with its function and make sure yours is generous for all your needs.

That's one thing I think people overlook quite a bit in computer building, when they don't know all the details.

Do you reccomend AMD or Intel?
I've always been an Intel guy. But I think you should research both and make your own decision.

To build a custom machine I always go to www.newegg.com. They always have good prices and very fast shipping.
As thelostpatrol said do some research, www.anandtech.com is a pretty good site, and then figure out which brand of products you would like to try. I'm an AMD fan but I've used Intel/AMD for years. Figure out what you want and then ask questions. We're here to help.
