Is there a way to turn off the scroll bar on the touch pad. Its been driving me nuts lately.

Yes, go to your mouse settings in the Control panel. Then click the Device Settings tab, click on "Settings..." button, click on the "Virtual Scrolling". There, you will see all the options for it (designate areas, enable/disable).

I disable it too. I use the up and down arrow keys.

Only product on the machine is Synaptics controller.  Current driver is only one offered at website.  It should be an option, if not only like a profile option such as docked/undocked.

Try this:
"Click Start, then type in "mouse" in the empty "search programs and files" field, click it, in the opened window select UltraNav, then uncheck touchpad, thereafter "Apply".

I suppose I posted my question under the incorrect Make and Model.  My apologies for there isn't such as option when I type 'mouse' in the search box

the only property source that appears whichever manner to approach it is the Synaptics Pointing Device which contains no option for such as stated previously

I have the same problem with my Toshiba Satellite win 7 (really annoying).

There is no "Virtual scrolling" option in all of the mouse settings.

Searching for mouse, there is no UltraNav utility (or Synaptics fir that matter).

Isn't there a registry key that can b set?

I gave up trying to find the check box to turn virtual scrolling off,

however, in my Synaptics Touchpad V7.2 mouse settings (Mouse properties - Device Settings - Settings) is a section:

Scrolling - One-Finger-Scrolling - Scrolling Region

There u can select the 2 lines and move them all the way to the right and bottom border respectively, and effectively make the scrolling regions nonexistent and thereby turning off virtual scrolling.

that worked!  Thanks for the workaround.  Don't you wonder if Synaptics tested the stupid thing?  It was sooo annoying..Bad design is all I'm sayin

Changed the lines to '1' and has pretty much eliminated the issue.  As for 'moving the lines' to the lower right - no idea

Interesting (clever) fix laugh4.gif

I struggled with this myself.  T420 Thinkpad.  In Win7 I found the answer is "Mouse Properties", but not the ones exposed through Windows, but the "device settings" tab.  Then I clicked on the "synaptics touchpad" in my case v5.9 USB, and clicked Settings.  Then and only then did I see the option of turning off one finger and two finger scrolling.

Unfortunately I don't think you can completely disable the feature but what i figure out is you can make the scrolling area on your mouse pad smaller; Click start > Type in "mouse" > go to device settings tab and click setting > a new window will appear > click virtual scrolling > scrolling region > and slide the scrolling region to the right as far as it can go

(i'm on an hp windows vista laptop)

It has been driving me nuts too and I just now finally got rid of it! Like other ones said, type Mouse in your "search program and files" of Start menu. Go to the last tab "Device Settings". Synaptics Touchpad is highlighted and you should have 2 available options: Disable and Settings. Click on Settings. Expand Scrolling and One-Finger scrolling. The click on Scrolling Region. A model of the pad shows up. The areas on the pad signify where on the pad (how far from the edge) the scrolling will take effect. For example the green area on the right hand side signifies the vertical scroll sensitive area. What I just discovered is that you can drag that area with your mouse to make it bigger and smaller! Now guess what! I made it small to the tune of 0! After applying and closing the Mouse control windows, voila: My vertical scrolling is finally gone. Good luck.
