"backing up" DVD movies

Hi all,

My folks are giving me a DVD burner for Xmas (which will mostly be used as an extra drive/reader/occasional imovie/wmm production of home movies for family back home) but i do want to make *ahem* "back up" copies *ahem* of DVD's I already own (for their protection - been burnt by scratched disks a few times) - which i believe is entirely with in my legal rights.

The question is, do i need any special (or hard to obtain) software for this, or will Nero (or similar) do an adequate job. Also, if I want to use this to copy a region four disk into a region 1 (or region free) format or vice versa do i need anything fancy for that?

thanks in advance,

Joe

I think that DVD-Copy X (or DVDXCOPY) is good.

DVDXCopy Express works pretty good, about $70 bucks anymore.

Good software though.

You can get ripper software for nothing, $70 is a complete waste!

I prefer to rip with the XVid Codex since it has good quality and is free. With DivX you must buy the pro version or put up with crap loads of spyware, but otherwise it is easy to use the software. Just follow the guides.

DVDXCopy Express then.

Easy simple to use.

DVDShrink then.
Small file (less than 1 meg)
Freeware
Well easy to use.
Makes any DVD region free.
Fully customisable. Set your own level of compression although the automatic setting always suits me.
Converts straight to Vob files which you drag into Nero to burn.
I can copy a DVD and burn it in one hour.
No installer
Did I mention its freeware?
