HUGE IN-DEPTH ACER TM4402 wlmi REVIEW!!! - Page 2

ugh, i really dont like that guy in that review (chazman or whatever ). he spent the last little while singing the notebooks praises then turns around and makes a little thread about how his is dying and he's jumped ship. to a sager. my god, the fool.

anyways, im downloading 3dmark05 right now, and it should be done in a couple hours. I'll run the benchmark tonight.

as for overheating, while I obviously cant testify for others because I'm the only one I know with the 4402, I can attest through personal experience that the notebook has never once overheated, and I dont belive it will. I have played half life 2 for 3 hours straight, and the temperature sat at an even 72 degrees when I finally turned it off. Ofcourse if you're retarted and block off the vents, then obviously you'll be doing harm.

also, the guy in that review stated that he's using a laptop fan. The problem with most laptop fans is that instead of pulling the hot air out, its just fanning air IN. I wanted to invest in one until I read somewhere that they sometimes do more harm than good, so I suspect that this *may* have something to do with it.

as such as well, its completely possible that his GPU and CPU are overheating through overuse. While this hasnt happened to me, I dont deny that it could, but after almost 2 months of use I seriously doubt it will actually shut itself down due to heat. It gets hot, sure, but it doesn't get MELTDOWN hot.

also, one last thing is that I think the 4402 should score somewhere in the 1700-1800 range. the 2500 for the x700 128mb is probably pushing it; Ive seen more in the range of 2100-2200. 2500 may be due to overclocking or a faster processor, I dont know. In either case, like I stated in my review, if you're looking to purchase this notebook as a straight up GAMING machine, then you may be better off looking elsewhere. In terms of priceerformance, I really think that this laptop is an excellent deal, and to ME personally, the extra 150 or so premium you would pay for the x700 128mb isnt worth it. Have a look at the MSI-1029 too. I dont know how reputable or reliable they are, but one thing is for sure, it does have better specs than the 4402.

regardless, I stand by my choice, and am loving my lappy =)

Alright, so I just ran 3dmark03 and 05 on the omega drivers version 2.6.71.
The scores I got were:

3dmark03 - 4341
3dmark05 - 1265

I must say, I am a bit disappointed with the 05 score. I was expecting somewhere in the range of 1700-1800, but I guess it was not to be. However, I only have 200mb free on my c:/ so that *may* have something to do with it, I dont know. What I do know is that I have a relatively clean system devoid of spyware or adware. I probably need to defrag or something though. Anyways, the 03 scores seem inline with what I've seen. The only things I was running in the background where a notepad file and one IE window.
I'm not sure if I should use the omega drivers or the catalyst drivers, but since Im not a hardcore gamer and the omega drivers have been working perfectly well, I'll probably stick with them.

However, one very interesting tidbit that I ran across when I checked the system details through 3dmark was this:

Description ATI MOBILITY RADEON X700 (Omega 2.6.71)
Manufacturer ATI Technologies Inc. (Omega 2.6.71)
Total Local Video Memory 128 MB
Total Local Texture Memory 128 MB
Total AGP Memory 256 MB
Driver File ati2dvag.dll
Driver Version 6.14.10.6571
Driver Details 8.172-050830a1-026409C-ATI-OMEGA

256 total AGP memory?? 128mb local video memory??? What the hell?? I'm not sure if the Omega drivers somehow enabled hypermemory or something, because I was under the impression that the 64mb version of the MR x700 didn't support HyperMemory. Whats going on ??? Perhaps this is just some sort of system bug?

Still, I think if I have the extra cash, I'll go buy another 512 stick of ram =).

Anyways, hope this update helps, but I have to get back to studying!
I know I did not own any acer laptop before but I'm really looking about purchasing the 4402 in the very very near future. I did read somewhere that the latest version of omega driver will enable the 64MB x700 hypermemory support. then again, i might be wrong.

Check the memory of your X700 by right-clicking the desktop, going to "Properties," "Settings," "Advanced," and "Adapter." If that says 256 MB, I'll be impressed.

I'd say that 3DMark05 score is perfectly reasonable. Getting another 512 MB of RAM couldn't hurt. The Ferrari, which has a 128 MB X700 (overclocked), gets in the 2500+ range in 3DMark05 (but it also has a faster processor and more RAM).

Thanks for the tests, by the way.

COOL!!! Thanks Frost for the info! I was gettin' worried about that over heating! Actually, when I had my old 128mb FX5900 in my desktop which is an AMD64 3000+ 1gig DDR 3200, I only scored 1180 in 3dMark2k5. So your score of 1265 is pretty respectable! 8-) Thanks again for the relieving information! :-)

glad to be of help guys!

covert, I just checked the properties, and as I expected it showed only 64 mb. Obviously, since I wouldnt be able to actually change the amount of physical memory on the gpu. But still, I'm somewhat mystified as to why 3dmark03 AND 05 listed the 256mb figure. Even more perplexing was that further down, when I have a look at the system ram analysis, a bit more than half of the 512 was allocated somewhere else. I'm hoping HM really is enabled. In that case I'll be one happy camper

wonderdude, glad to hear I helped alleviate your concerns. I hope you guys trust me on this, that this is a REALLY nice laptop, for the price. Every other notebook I looked at didn't compare for two big reasons; a slow 4200rpm HD, and the lack of a dedicated GPU ( lol and no, the X200 w/ HM doesnt count haha ).

Ok, back to studying once again!

I am typing this on an acer 4402 right now, and i find this review to be accurate. It's not mine, but I made the purchasing reccomendation for the friend that bought it. He gave me a budget and said "find the best laptop you can" this is what I came up with based on specs and other acer lappys I have seen in person. Frost, since you said this is your first laptop, trust me, this is nothing re: heat. I've gamed on lappys that are way worse, and they still run fine. This laptop got about 1100 in 3dmark 05. (no overclock, low detail graphics but full power config) Used stock drivers. first 3dmark was something like 500 until I dropped the detail settings and ran msconfig.
Looking up the pros and cons that frost wrote, I find them exactly in line with what my friend and I have found. If you want a decent case and care at all about performance, then this is best in budget.

I can honestly tell you that the 128mb x700 in my 8104 gets 2570 3dmarks (in 3dmark05) without any overclocking, but just by installing the newest drivers. The Ferrari is actually getting more in the 2600-2700 range in 3dmark05 with the newest drivers (and 2900-3000 3dmarks with 2 GB of the ram for it).

If you were to update your drivers to 5.10 mobility, I would bet you could get 1700-1800 in 3dmark05. Your scores in 3dmark03 are as high as what you expected, because for those older games, your driver works pretty well. For newer games (2004 and later) it won't work as well as it could, because you're using older drivers. Just my opinion. I wouldn't expect those older scores to improve, even with the newest drivers. Right now 3dmark05 is the only one that matters much.

Very nice review, well written!

Thanks for posting such a nice review. I just bought this laptop online this past Saturday (10/29/05) and later thought I should've went with the Ferrari instead, but after reading this review, I feel I made a good choice. It should be delivered to my door this Friday!

Glad to know there are others out there who purchased this laptop and are enjoying it. I like how you included pics in the review.

This will be my first computer (other than my ibook) that has a decent videocard. My previous is/was a DELL desktop, w/integrated graphics. How do you update the drivers? Go to ATI's website???
http://www.ati.com/online/mobilecatalyst

That will take you directly to the newest ATI Mobility Catalyst Driver. Download it, uninstall your previous one (might want to also run driver cleaner on it) then install this and you should be good to go. Be sure to run 3dmark05 on it before and after switching to the new driver, to see what gains you get.

Nice looking laptop
I wish Dell used the curved keyboards.

I currently own a 8104A and after reading this review, I bought a 4402 for my gf so we can both play WoW.

Just a few notes:
1. 8104 has a brighter screen, as we as viewing angle. If I move my head to the left or right of screen, the opposite edge of where my head moved to gets significantly darker on the 4402 than 8014.

2. I was very surprised at the 3Dmark05 gap. 8014 scores 2723 with catalyst 5.10 and 4402 scores 1165. However, 4402 ran every game I threw at it just fine anyways. 5.10 does give it "hypermemory", which the benchmark reports as having "128mb local texture, 128mb system texture = 256mb total AGP memory" (yes I know it's PCIe but 3DMark doesn't care

3. Pressing the bluetooth button on the 4402 does nothing. Unless it's just me, the Bluetooth is not standard on the 4402.

4. Believe it or not, the 4402 is about half an inch deeper (front to back) than the 8104. However, weight is about the same.

5. Another surprise for me is the wireless. 4402 is not bad by any standard, in fact quite good. But the 8104 always finds the network faster and connects before the 4402.

6. Both laptops get warm around the touch pad area, but it's not bothersome.

7. ePowerManagement came with my 8104, which I consider to be a great feature. Was very disappointed that the 4402 didn't come with it.

8. I tried installing another stick of DDR400 512mb to the 4402, and Sandra ends up reporting both sticks running at DDR200. I've read reports about Xpress200M having issues with DDR400 ram. I can confirm such in my case. Sticking another DDR333 512mb however, Sandra reports both sticks running at DDR 333.

Depends on how much time I have, I just might do a comparison review between the lappys
post #33 of 91
Thanks for the new info. It's nice to know that HyperMemory is indeed enabled.
Yes, very cool! Thanks for comparing the two. Get some comparison pics as well, if you can. Side by side, etc. Nice to know what your money gets you, if you can spend it.

Can the Ferrai's X700 do HyperMemory?
Wow, that was a very nice review. I wish this review had been around in the summer when I was looking at this notebook. Alot of people who review their notebooks either only show the 3dmark05 benchmarks or say how well it plays "AOE2" and "The Sims". I like your room too, it fits my needs as a neat freak.
Thanks!

Bought it... ntfs question...

bought 512 ram at micro pc for $70., installed it and now want to turn fat32 into ntfs...
but,
do I have to do a complete format on a spanky new pc to achieve this?

and as long as I'm at it, should I partition it... how to get instructions for that as well...

I'm new... be gentle.
thnx

If I where you I would reformat the whole thing and put on your own OS Acer put alot of BS on there you don't need. This is just my prefrance
post #39 of 91
What did Acer put on there that you don't need? My 8104 came with just the basics (ie: ePower Manager), and the option to install more stuff (ie: anti-virus) off of the CD if I wanted to. Nothing else was installed.

There's no need to reformat. Just do a search on this forum - there are many threads about converting the hard drive.
