HUGE IN-DEPTH ACER TM4402 wlmi REVIEW!!! - Page 5

Good comprehensive review. I noticed that most notebooks nowadays do not have a Line In including this one but some still do.
To me, a line in is a must.

I wonder, if with the 4200rpm HD in the 4404 that it has less of a heat problem on the right hand side than the 4402 has been said to have?

Glad to see everyone found my review helpful =)

unfortunately, I have some terrible news! Some bastard stole my laptop yesterday while I was writing my calculus midterm!!! I'm so sad...not so much over the actual laptop (hopefully insurance takes care of it), but because of all the personal files on my drive =(. Hopefully, I find the guy who did it so I can stab him bahaha.

Anyways, everyone enjoy your laptop and take care of it! Chain it to your leg so you dont lose it =/. I think when insurance takes care of this, I'll buy the same laptop again =).

hey Frost, great review. I ordered the 4404 and it'll be here tomorrow

So the 4404 has the 4200rpm hd? That's disappointing, considering it says 5400rpm on ZZF's detail page. I'll call them after I get it to see what I can get.

I think with the HD issues, if it's 60gb, its a 7200rpm, 100gb 5400rpm, and 120gb 4200 rpm.

That’s new to me upgrading the cpu to the MT line of amd turions. Will this also work on the 4402wlmi? Also would anyone who has upgraded their ram to the 3200 speed post a benchmark speed of the memory. I am curious to see the differences.

Looking to add more ram this spring wondering which speed i should pick up.

In addition, is it possible to upgrade gpu on these laptops or is it embedded in the motherboard?

Also a tip for those who have heat problems with their 4402, I never see above 55 degrees simply place on an aluminum pad (I use a cookie cooking pan for material when I made mine its just a sheet of aluminum .5cm thick) when gaming. Other times I just leave air under the laptop and avoid placing it on wood for long periods of time.

Does your fan, or anyone elses for that matter, pretty much run constantly? Even when the laptop is closed, the fan still runs? I have the cpu speed set to low and the monitor shuts off when the top is closed. I have set powerplay to middle range I believe. Any clues? Search hasn't been much help. Thanks for your time.

You can change the Fan settings with acer ePower management. there is a setting there that enables "Fan always on" or something like that.

i changed that and now my fan stops every now and then when not on heavy load. it does get pretty hot when gaming , and i have seen a performance drop that i believe is caused by this heating. i dont know if its the GPU overheating, or something else like the cpu. i also believe this perfomance drop is the cause for low 3d mark 03 and 05 points.

Oh, btw i used to post a problem with my dvd drive. the problem was fixed apparently the issue was Windows itself, a bad install. reformatting fixed it.

I love my machine, is powerful enough, i just wished it was the same x700 as the ferrari machine. the small difference in power between the ferrari's and this travelmate would help in certain games.

my next laptop will be a dual core turion, any words on any model that might have this processor eventually? i hope they release a 8204 version but of turion

Acer will most likely be one of the first with dual core Turion notebooks, since the official release of these processors is (I believe) scheduled for May 9th.

When I got this laptop it came with a 100 gig hard drive at 5400rpm made by Hitachi, It was fast however it would heat often to around 55C. Served me very well for over a year and a half.

Just this past week I decided to send in my notebook in for repair for a cracked hinge on the upper lid, I carry this notebook almost everyday to and from school in a backpack so over time it happened. I asked them to replace that lid and the rubber feet that have been missing for some time. The service was amazing although i have the full acer advantage 3 year warranty they sent FedEx to my door the same day I called. The following day being a friday the called me up asking if they have permission to replace the hard drive because the found a few bad sectors I never noticed them and the hard drive worked fine for the longest time only when looking back at some log files i found that there were errors.

So they replaced the lid that I asked and added a new interior green plastic case, black bezel for the screen the rubber feet, new dvd drive because the lid wasn't in line with the case, followed by a new Seagate 100gig 5400.2 Momentus hard drive with 8mb cache without asking for these extra items. They went over the top for this repair and it shows how acer takes care of their customers.

I backup my entire hard drive before sending it and formated it with their factory cd just to make thing easy for them. So I didn't lose any data.

I got my laptop back the following Tuesday looking brand new with the entire exterior case replaced and a new faster cool running hard drive.

My next steps are now to format it back to ntfs like I discussed before but this time dual boot it with ubuntu with xlg and beryl.

C:/ 15gig Windows
D:/ 25gig More Programs
E:/ 35gig Data and temp dir
~15 gig extra space for ubuntu

Great service and support from Acer. I'll give them that.

I'll post some new methods for the newest drivers for this laptop if anything changed since last time along with a few tips. Feel free to ask any questions on this laptop or the service, I have recomended this laptop to 4 people and every one of them got it and are glad they did.
