15.4'' vs 17'' screens

Hi! Fairly new here. I finally got my choice down to the Sager 5320 or the 5720 with the WSXGA screen. My dilemma is choosing between the two size screens 15.4'' or 17''. So far I have not found any other thread on this. If it exists, I will gladly be pointed to it. My Home PC is with a 19'' Samsung 193P running in 1024x768.I do not travel that much but when I do I am gone up to 2 months ( retired...don't you know). Could someone point out the merits of both screens and the accompanying recommendations? Yep, this elder does play Far Cry and MS FS04 and a few more.

I would say - size, weight and clarity are the factors that are to be addressed. There should also be a bit of power requirement/usage difference.

If you are satidfied with 1024x768, then the 15.4 WSXGA will be more than adequate (from a real-estate perspective). Note, however, that the size of the letters, etc., will be much smaller.

Side note: The native resolution for your monitor is 1280 x 1024. You will enjoy much sharper images, text, etc if you switch to this resolution instead of the one you are currently using.

if one is widescreen, and the other not... go with the widescreen. life was ment to be seen through widescreen. your eyes are ovals not circles.

Groston, I well know that my screen native resolution for my monitor is 1280x1024. But I prefer the 1024x768 resolution to play my games and in general. And our eyes are not what they use to be, for my Lady and me.

Still curious to see if most prefer the 15.4" or the 17" sreen and why?

Let's face it, the 5720 seems to be a better laptop just because of the video card. But is the size of the screen worth it? Come on you young guys, what say you?

I prefer 17" - because I'm an American and I like everything big!!!

Actually, I like having more desktop for my icons and for having multiple windows open at one time. For games that support it, 17 wide is great.

After many notebooks I finally got one with a 17" screen and I am never going back to a smaller screen. Yes, the notebook is the biggest monster I've had but since I do not move with it every day it I reap the rewards of a larger screen all the time. The larger screen is much easier on my eyes than a smaller one especially at the more relaxed resolutions.

Best regards;

My 2 cents...I bought a 9890 that hasn't been delivered yet (probably a month away) but it has a 17 inch screen. I'm currently using a 15.4" Dell and I'm getting the 17" because I want to see more of spreadsheets, word docs, and db's that I'm working on without scrolling so much. I don't play many games so I don't know about the differences there. I also want to watch a movie once in awhile when traveling and I think the 17" screen would be better. I can let you know more when I get the 9890 if you haven't already made a decision by then.

i would recommend 17" only to those that use the laptop as their only computer. With a 19" lcd at home, i would only go 15.4" for your new notebook. Not only is it more mobile, but if you wanted, you could always hook it up to your 19" lcd at home if you wanted to.

when on a laptop you are generally a little closer to the screen than on desktop anyway, so a 15.4" screen is actually quite nice to work on.

LOL...I would have a hard time connecting to the LCD as Mama is almost always there. That is why a need a laptop: FREEDOM!

Gentlemen, I would like to thank you sincerely for your comments. The last few that have come in made up my mind. Analyzed logically, it has to be the 17" lappy.

Again thank you for your input. A new 5720 lappy it will be with a WSXGA screen.

Good choice. I love my 17" screen. Let us know how you like it when you get it.

Yes, but due to the shape of your eyelids and socket, you see more laterally than vertically. In other words, your field of vision is an oval.

It's actually not because of your eyes at all. Your vision is oval because the brain takes the images from your eyes and puts them together to equal one. You only see out of your pupil. It doesn't matter what shape the socket or eyelids are unless you are squinting then the pupil isn't a circle any more and you see more horizontally than vertically.
