need help with a minor, but annoying problem

Alrighty... I'm having a very slight issue with WinXP and i am here to enlist your help to solve it..

Any time I open up "my computer" (see annoyed1.jpg), everything initially seems all hunky-dory, right?

But no! If I open up any drive or link from My Computer, they ALWAYS open in a separate window (see annoyed2.jpg).. It is BEYOND annoying, and i can't figure out how to make it stop doing this.

Before you suggest that I set my folder options to open everything in the same window, be aware that this option is already set (see annoyed3.jpg)...

Any ideas on what I changed to make it do this?
I hate it!

try and see if it happens when you have "show common tasks" selected. that's what mine is on right now, and it all opens in 1 window

mmm..doesn't it do what it is supposed to do?

Not a bug, a feature.

Another words: there is no way you will open those folders/drives in the same window by opening shortcuts.

Go to Tools, Folder Options, and click the radio button "Open each folder in the same window."

Didn't he just say he has it checked?

I suppose you've tried it already, but try unchecking the same window box, reboot and recheck it.

And btw, it's not "another words" it's "in other words". Just a little fyi so you don't look like english is your 3rd language.

It's not a 'feature' when my two other computers open the C drive in the same window, and the same thing for 3 other friends I asked to check what happens on their computers.

plus anything opens in that separate window, within that window.. so after that's open, i dont get a new spawned window for anything i click.

I have rebooted several times.. This has actually been going on for a really long time, just got to a point of peak annoyance tonight so I finally decided to ask about it.

Oh thank you.

Your tip sucks BTW. It just won't work.

I didn't know this forum required a Master Degree in English Language, otherwise I would go somewhere else.

I can beat you in any spelling content by the way. Take my word for it.

What? I'm supposed to read the whole damn post before I reply now? It was almost 10 lines long!

It's just not my night. :-)

Have you tried setting it to "Open each folder in it's own window", hit APPLY, then setting it back to "Open each folder in the same window", hit APPLY. Then see what happens.

If that doesn't work, Open My Computer Window, click TOOLS > FOLDER OPTIONS drop down menu. Click VIEW tab, press the RESET ALL FOLDERS button, tell it YES, Press OK, Close My Computer Window. Then see if that fixes the problem.

have you thought it might be the theme your using
post #13 of 18
Try this . . . .

Right click and create a new shortcut on your desktop to:

%windir%\EXPLORER.EXE /n, /e, "::{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}"

(Keep the quotes.)

Name it My Computer, or whatever you like.

Hide your "minor, but annoying" My Computer.

Ha ha ha, I'll take you up on that, if only I knew what a "spelling content" was. My tip works on many Windows-related issues all the time. It takes a full 1.5 minutes to try it and see. Why bash me for it?

I couldn't seem to get the problem solved, so I just reinstalled Windows. Thanks anyways
post #16 of 18
then your going to reinstall your stardock theme and here we go again right?
holy shit the threads just get funnier and funnier, what a great break from studying

Oh yah, in relevance to the question asked, it's most likely your theme, because it works fine for me in stock XP Pro.

boo boo -
Yep! Using my Stardock theme will sure break Windows! ohhhh noes!
er.. wait.
What Stardock theme?
I suppose you mean Windowblinds.
But... hold on a second here ---
I've never had Windowblinds installed on this computer.
If seeing my Vista theme makes you jump to conclusions like a crazed Chimpanzee, I'd hate to see what you do when you're actually right about something.
My theme was changed with a .dll patch from neowin.net.. And I had this problem FAR before I changed that.
So what else do you have up your sleeve there, bright guy?
Nothing? ok, well then you can go ahead and bite me.

Mr k6 - this is not directed at you
