XPS 2/M170 LCD Screens - Samsung/LG???

Ok,

What gives? I have seen the washed out Samsung LCD's and the beautiful LG LCD's. I read in a post that the Samsung is all that is available in the US XPS machines, is this true? I was under the impression that it's a crap shoot as to what you actually get with your machine. Kind of like whatever is in stock at the time. My AW had a Philips LCD which was insanely beautiful. I hear people having issues with their displays, how much of this is being "Anal" versus an actual issue?

I am a Dell NooB, what the hell is light leakage anyway? I am thinking that the LCD cover has small cracks and lets light out???

Thanks in advance...

light leakeage is when white light comes out from the edges of the screen.

As I understand it both screens are available. You can call in your order and request LG if thats what you prefer. Some of it is people being anal some of it is bad leakage. This is not a dell only problem as most manufacturers get their lcd's from the same companies;LG,Samsung,Sony, it can happen with any of them.Leakage occurs on the outer edges of the screen, not caused by cracks, more likely fit of bezel. Unless it is really bad you can only notice it on black screens.

Take a look at your LCD with the power off.

Next, boot up and observe the change in blackness. Note the uneveness of the blackness. That's your light leakage.

Bothof my XPS2's have LG's. They are absolutley gorgeous, vibrant colors and no leakeage of any kind. If their is what they call a sparkle on them I do not notice.

im not sure what the xps2 is shipping with but if you do get a samsung this try these color settings red/blue brightness: 98, contrast 95, gama .83, green: brightness 96, contrast 95, gama .83, and put the didgital vibrance about half way between the start and the first line it will fix the washed out look right up as long as your screen does not have alot of leakage it lookes better then the lg imo...

I have had both the Samsung and LG screens - 2x of each in total and I have to say in my opinion the Samsung screen gives much better colour consistentcy and does not look oily on light coloured backgrounds (sparkles).

By colour adjustment (Nvidia control panel) you can get them to look very vibrant..............I would not worry they are very good.

You need to adjust the color profile of the LG screen to make it look good, it's way to much blue to begin with. There are several threads on this already though so no need to start another one I guess. Also, if you have the LG you might want to check out my recent thread about how to decrease the sparkles (basically, raise the screen to lower the angle between it and the keyboard, does miracles). I do find that maybe the brightness of the LG panel is a bit low, but I havnt really seen the samsung so I dont know if that is better, also, I am not sure this really is a problem, ie that I would want it higher even if I had the option for it, but having the option is of course always nice. Naturally, good blacks and a hight brightness doesnt always go hand in hand....

Any way to know which screen you are getting when configuring your XPS M170 on the Dell canada web site?

Cause I am a bit wary of sales reps, since around 30% of the time they get details wrong or give contradicting info. Especially on the new systems.

Is it unanimous the Sony lcd panels are now the ones to get with the XPS M170?

Or that the the LG's are the ones to avoid?

I am still to see any trustworthy source confirm that Dell actually offer Sony panels, so far I have only seen unconfirmed rumours about this. When I talked to dell, they denied having sonys.

Someone helped me out and this is it:
Open REGEDIT and go to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE>SYSTEM>CurrentControlSet>Enum>DISPLAY.

In mine, I show a folder called SEC5557. I guess the SEC means I have a Samsung. Apparently, if you have a folder that says "LP" or something, it means LG/Philips.

There you go!
