Can't decide! Laptop for School. - Page 4

Having a laptop in college is a must! Well it depends what courses you take, but I am in business and between taking notes (lots of them), making presentations and doing research, having a computer is a must! That is why I am looking to get one for Univercity. Now, having one for highschool....it could be useful for taking notes and stuff, but at that age your prob just gonna be goofing around! I know I would be! I would agree with getting a wicked desktop. And people are right, no matter where you go to school, if you pull out a $2600 laptop each class, your bound to get some attention and get it stolen. So go with a desktop!! And get a lappy in 3-4 years!

The 9300 fits every need, but you will need to buy accessories, and be prepared for its large size. I bought a $80 case, and you have to be fairly strong to lug the thing around with books (thankfully I am ). Secondly, I only use the laptop out-of-class. I actually go into computer labs, and take up the space next to a computer just to hook up the 9300. Granted, the 6000D is smaller, but a difference of 2-3 inches still isn't going to make THAT much of a size difference.

If anything, go with the 9300. It gives you the option of an awesome video card, great specs, the $750 off or 30% off, and a 17" extreme resolution monitor. It's better than choosing the alternative which will be close to that price range (assuming you max the specs), but you'll be regretting not having top of the line hardware and the beauty of the LCD size.

Actually the size difference between 9300 and 6000 is only half an inch in depth and an inch in width, hardly that much bigger and your right, doesnt make that big a difference, what does make a difference is two more usb portts, a larger screen with dvi and vga ouput and a graphics card that is powerful enough for current needs/games and future needs/games.

with the 9300 and the WUXGA screen.. does WoW lag at all on high setting? I wonder if it'll lag in other modern games that came out this year? since the resolution is 1900x1200 and you really can't go to a lower resolution, right?

or can you go to a lower resolution and play those games? reason why i say that is because i bought a 19in LCD, anything less than its "optimal solution" and things look like crap on screen. i'm assuming that same thing will happen w/ the 9300.

right?

thx in advance for the info!
with a wuxga screen you may not be able to play the game at its native resolution and/or play with max settings of aa/ai because the GPU is working harder to render all those extra pixels, you can use the wuxga screen at a lower resolution but as with all lcd panels, using them in non native resolution effects the image quality.
if you want to play serious games with maximum video settings with no lag then I suggest you get the wxga screen instead.

That acer has a darker lcd screen with not as good a contrast as the 9300, I dont think they even offer a glossy option if thats something you like, the keyboard layout with a 5 degree curve isnt the best idea and the overall build quality is not as good as the 9300 nor is the x700 nearly as powerful as the nvidia go 6800 card in the 9300, add to this the acer 8100 series cost more and its a no brainer.

The screen is among the best I've seen for a laptop (wsxga+) and the video card is strong enough for my likeness, while not too strong to drain the battery when not plugged in like the i9300 might do. Battery life is great with the 9 cell. I've never played with a 9300 so I can't compare. If casual gaming is your thing go with the 6000. With minimal overclocking (350/230) my x300 128mb actually performs better than my old laptop that had a mr9700 128mb with Unreal 2004 and Doom 3...haven't had time to try anything else.

I also agree with another comment someone made here, you should give a serious look toward the Asus z70va, I almost bought one last week. The i6000 I found was similar to an Asus with similar specs minus the x700 card and RAM which I'm upgrading anyway...the x700 wasn't worth the extra $500 to me.

Have fun and good luck!

The 6000D is a nice laptop, I almost bought one, except for the video card thats underpowered and the 9300 was less than two hundred dollars more after coupon with a bigger screen and better graphics.

The 6000D is not quite living up to the title of "multipurpose or multimedia laptop" because its really lacking in the graphics department, the 9300 truly is a multi purpose laptop especially for a college student, laptop, stereo, tv, dvd player, gaming machine, in a dorm the 9300 truly cuts down on the appliances you need

The FPS is 80+, but the loading of files hurts the stutter process. I'd recommend 2GB of RAM by custom installing if possible.

Dunno if the games support 1900 x 1200. I know a few officially supported 1440 x 900 which is the default 17" (not the enhanced version), that's what I got.

games will lagg on a wuxga screen if you try to use max AA/AI settings on your games at 1920x1200 resolution, thats a staggering amount of extra pixels your card has to render which means you will have to turn down your AA/AI settings.

Though I'm in college, so it's a bit of a different story, the huge screen has not been a hindrance once to me. How strong are you? I'm 5'9" and 160, medium build and I have no problems at all taking my XPS2 with me. If I had more than one book to tote around it might be a problem, however. But if you want to play games for the next 3-4 years, the 9300 is essentially your only option, unless you want to look at Asus or Sager. The 9300 is a fantastic deal, but if you are concerned about size/weight, it may make sense to get a 15" laptop.

My XPS2 has had nothing but good things said about it in the public though. Even the chicks dig it majorly. =)

For those stating that you don't need a laptop in high school, I'd like to ask you what year you went to high school that gives you such a position to say things. My grades, while good, could definitely have been boosted by this nice piece of hardware I have now. If you went to high school in 1980 and you're speaking out against high schoolers needing a laptop, all I can say is.... wow.
Sorry but he's right, no lappy in high school, there's a difference between necessity and spoiled. In high school a lappy would be a conversation piece and even in college its not a good idea to have in class unless your class requires it. Otherwise you'll be surfing the net instead of listening to lectures and paying attention. The only high school student that needs a laptop is one that is in some sort of boarding school/ in a dorm environment away from home.
