How do I make my CPU/GPU run cooler overnight?

I occasionally leave my laptop on overnight to download things. I use i9kfangui to manage the fans so they only come on when things start to get hot. However, this is inevitable, and when the fans do come on, it gets loud (in a silent room at night when I'm trying to sleep).

How can I make my CPU/GPU run cooler? I'm not looking into any hardware tweaks, strictly software. Am I right in assuming that underclocking is the way to go? Or does that only help battery life and not temperature?

If underclocking can help me, can anyone give me a quick how-to? Thanks in advance.

Drop the volts on the CPU using CHC.

what is CHC and where can I get it?
Does this hinder performance at all?

anything I can do for the GPU?

undervolt and force cpu to always at lowest mhz, undercLock GPU 2d clock to as low as poossible, raise the laptop by 1-2" so it sucks in more air, these should get you an almost silent laptop. atleast for my 9300 that is.

okay, but how do I undervolt the and force the CPU to the lowest MHZ? And how do I underclock the GPU 2D clock?

Thanks. This didn't mention anything about downclocking the GPU though, how can I do that?

In any case, +rep.

If you update your vidcard drivers to the forceware(dunno what its called sorry). You can change the settings.

FYI: if you havent heres a good site to get some drivers

http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/

Search around the forums to check which series (of drivers) to get. Or try out a few and check to see which one is good for you.

Thanks for the link...

When I go to adjust the CPU clock settings, I see a Settings option and I can select Standard (2D) or performance (3D). What exactly does this mean? Does the GPU switch back and forth between these two setings based on what I'm doing? Or r the clock settings used for everything? What exactly qualify's as "2D" or 3D"?
Yes it does switch back. I'm not 100% sure how it works but I'm 99% sure that it probably just looks for DirectX/OpenGL processes running and if it finds them it runs at 3d clock settings, if it doesn't see that, then it runs on 2d. Only underclock the 2d settings.

Undervolting your CPU will do a lot because you are lowering the total amount of heat generated in your PC. I rarely hear mine now, with the exception of when I'm gaming, and I don't use any fan control programs.

Good luck!

Use an air conditioner maybe? I dunno...I leave my AC on 68 all the time so my room is usually cool. I would recommend getting a pacific breeze notebook cooler if you haven't already gotten one.. they are like $15-20

Because that's an intelligent answer that has anything to do with the question asked.

I'd say undervolting would be your best bet. Also try leaving the back of your lappy up to let the fans have a larger supply of cool air.

you could use speedswitch and set it on dynamic switching

so it runs @ slow until it needs it, ramps up to max speed for what it needs, then back to slow

also, when you are using i8fanGUI, do you have 'temp control' running
ive got mine on office, so unless im doing rendering, or 100% cpu for 15min or longer its pretty much 600mhz, 45-55C no fan

I live in a dorm right now. The air conditioner is out of my control. I have the pacific breeze cooler already
