Best Linux - Page 2

ati makes the fglrx driver for 3d. there is an opensource dri driver for 2d that works very well, but it doesnt do 3d.

yeah, the xorg-ati module works very well for 2d stuff, but if you do anything more advanced than AVI playback, it will set you back a good few FPS, and forget about games. FGLRX does an acceptable job running games but it had a lack of features (such as no ability to suspend) that make it suck so bad

Just wanted to let you know my experience with Linux.
LiveCDs are the way to go to learn more. HERE is the list. I'd stick with those at the top of the list. That's not to say some further down the page are no good, it's just that for noobs it's probably best to use on that has more info in the forums (ie-higher on the list=more people using it=more people talking about it).
Once you've found one you like, DUAL BOOT Windows and *insert distro here LINUX.
I will repeat one thing that has been said many times on this board. You have to make an effort to learn more about Linux or your efforts will most likely fail and you won't be happy.

why do you hate suse so much? it is less than 2gigs for the normal KDE install

and ive learned to just do the network install. it works great and only needs a 60mb download. i can do a KDE suse network install in about 2 hours, ends up being less than windows

even a network install is just over 2gb, and you gotta go KDE with suse, gnome + suse = wrong. Still huge and takes forever. I prefer a 700mb iso burned to a cd and installed within 20 minutes or so.

I hate suse because its slow and crappy (9.x). haven't tried 10 because the network install just takes forever, i don't have time to wait for it to d/l 2 gigs

What is a good Linux book for a new user to linux. One that goes over everything the kernals, shell programming, network utilities, etc. Please no Linux for dummies crap, a real informative book. I do have some experience with mandrake 9.0, nothing to laborate though.

the Linux Bible i would guess. or "Hacking Linux".

that said, screw books, the only real way to learn is to work on it, tweak it, and google for every little thing you don't know how to do.

ABF has it right.

That's how I learned linux.

Also, if you want a great linux forum, e-mail me. Promoting other forums is against the forum rules, so I can't publicly post the link.
