SPDIF/headphone out on M3438G

Well, it says headphone out, so I took a guess that it could be used as a standard analogue line output, too? (ie. not as SPDIF, but just using a standard 3.5mm stereo jack output that I can hook up to an analogue stereo line-in of a HiFi?)

Only prob in this scenario is that I can hear PCM type modem noises from the SPDIF/headphone line output whenever the laptop is running at full speed. Strangely, when I press the Silent (fan) button to throttle back the speed this noise disappears from the line output.

Do you need some sort of hardware decoder to use this SPDIF output? Ie. can't you just hook it up to an analogue line-input (non-spdif)?

I'm not overly familiar with SPDIF connections or uses, so sorry for the noobish question.

Ta,

I use the Headphone output often, to listen to hockey-broadcasts on my home-cinema. It works ok. Would have been nice with better soundlevel but ok. Be sure to use the best line-in on the amplifier. Theres a big difference with for ex. phono-in and others. Then you can get disturbing background noise.

Yeah, I have an audiophile analogue setup for music production, so the signal throughput should be ok.

The routing is from the M3438G line-out into a Soundcraft Ghost 8-buss analogue mixer, then into active monitors via balanced TRS.

As I say, though, there is little (if any) noise outputted from the M3438G line output UNTIL I switch the laptop's "silent" function off, allowing the M3438G to run at full speed. Then I get the severe interference from the same line-out.

If wondered if it was because I don't have any digital SPDIF decoders. The line-output is going straight into an analogue amplifier.

I will try also at home this evening since its hockey live. But when I use it for movies, I use SPDIF. It works great.

Perhaps I could clear a doubt with you guys. I have a M3438G too and would like to set up a 5.1 sound system on this system. However, I'm not sure on how to do this, as surely I will need some special cables to connect my speaker cables to the spdif entry. To be more precise, the speakers' cable has 3 exits: one for the rear channel, one for the front channel and the other for the sub-woofer. Anyone could give me some pointers on how to set this up?

Thanks in advance!
