Thread Starter
I have a cracked hinge so I was wondering if i take it in for service, will I get a newer model (MX7515) or will they fix it. Anyone ever do this service yet?? Let Me Know!!!!

Uh I seriously doubt they'd give you a new system over something as minor as that.

Hehe, yeah that's a bit of an overestimate.

You will likely get a new lid... that's about it though.

Depending on who the provider is, a cracked hinge may not be covered; quite a few of the extend warranty providers do not cover this. It use to be a major issue when I did repairs. They would replace a crack screen, but for whatever reason (and it was in the policy they handed out at purchase) would not cover the hinge.

Who is the underwritter for your policy?

The Gateway 74xx and 75xx as well as the eMachines m68xx are all based on an Arima Laptop. There have been plenty of problems with the hinge cover cracking. Arima is even replacing the covers on machines that are long out of warranty. Look in the Gateway and eMachines section for lots of info on the hinge problem.

Best buy usually doesnt cover 'cosmestic' problems. A minor crack at the hinge is considered a cosmetic problem, unless things have changed.

I would think twice before taking my pc to best buy, I have had bad experience.
You can take this as a grain of sand, just letting you know ahead.

Look hard enough and every single product out there has had a bad or lukewarm review from someone. Take everything with a grain of salt.

When the 68xx/74xx models were first released, they were "DEVO" status - meaning they were replaced on the spot. Now they are sent out for service. The hinges ARE covered by the PSP. You can technically send it straight to Arims (the OEM) and bypass BBY, but it won't count towards the "no lemon" clause of the PSP.

I'd send it in if I were you, I was tlaking to a guy who claimed to work for Best Buy as a tech and he wasn't even A+ certified. Now A+ really doesn't mean crap, but its like a high school diploma; you atleast tried and passed.
I have a ton of certifications, so many that I have more letters AFTER my name than IN my name. That doesn't mean a great deal in a forum setting, but I assure you I worked quite hard to get each of them, and have repeatedly proven so to my peers and clients. A+ isn't one of them. A+ means so little that someone's lack of an A+ means nothing. Many of the best computer/network technicians I've come in contact with have no certifications at all. If I hadn't wanted to be a trainer, I don't know that I would have undergone the effort to get mine, either. The only value A+ has is for people who are switching careers that want to get their foot in the door someplace. Once you've gotten a job that provides the sort of experience A+ tests for, the certification is useless.

But the guys at Best Buy won't fix it anyway, A+ certified or not. They'll send it to Arima.

I work at best buy, specifically the geek squad and can tell you right now, we will have you fill out some paperwork and it will be sent out. A cracked hinge -is- covered under the psp. Average turn around time is 2-3 weeks but can take as little as 10 days. Definitely send it out through BB as you dont get charged shipping fees and it counts towards the lemon law.

I think when I worked at BBY as a Tech, only 3 of us had A+ certs, out of 16 techs. A+ is not a requirement to be a tech at BBY.

Best Buy won't pay for the cert...so who in their right mind would waste $100 on it?

I wasted years of my life in the IT industry...and if I'd paid for any one of the numerous certs I'd had, I'd shoot myself. I only got what my employer told me to get.
