Hey, you guys!

I found this at Tigerdirect.com: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicati...156-2076&Tab=0. Can anyone tell me if it is a wirelesss PCMCIA card for a laptop. I want to buy it as a gift, and don't understand all the jargon that is used to describe it. If you could tell me if this will work on a 2 year old Acer laptop with a PCMCIA slot, that would be great! Thanks

Yes it is a wireless PCMCIA card and it should work in an Acer laptop. If you are going to use a wireless PCMCIA card you should use a PCMCIA card that is from the same maker as the Wireless LAN port. It makes setup and configuration a whole lot smoother than mixing brands.

If you dont know the brand of wireless LAN router that the reciepient has then this may not be a bad deal. Just be prepared to do some free tech support

That's a wireless LAN card alright. Mighty good price on it too, though I have no idea as to its quality. But it is PCMCIA WiFi LAN card.

Yes it is a PCMCIA card for a laptop (or anything that takes PC Cards); it is a 802.11b wireless NIC - I've never heard of that brand, and I do not trust TigerDirect (as they are a liquidator), but for $15 you can't go wrong (or so it would seem).

It should work on the Acer, provided that Acer is running Windows 2000 or XP... It may work with Windows 9x, but I'd look around for the manufacturer's website and see what drivers they have available.

Finally, not all wireless cards are compatible with different wireless Access Points, but they usually are... I just wanna be clear on that.

Sweet, i suppose it will work, as my campus is wifi signalling all the time. I didn't have any trouble connecting to my campus from my 8890. It didn't even ask me for a pw or anything, all i had to do was turn my computer on and click IE. Take it easy!

edit: Thanks again, the Acer is running 2000 Pro, so should be no problem. I kinda trust TD but thats just because i ordered a Nvidia (did i just say that?) 64 Mb vid card for my desktop years ago! Unfortunately i never got it to work. lol, i'm guessing it was the AGP slot on my desktop. But this is besides the fact. I'm gonna order it. Peace!

Well, you can find their DRIVER PAGE HERE and HOLY COW, check this out: BUY.COM's price for the SAME Frickin' Thing - this either means BUY.COM is jacked or TigerDirect is selling refurbs...

Well, wouldn't that mean that BUY.com is selling refurbs as well? and what's the harm in getting one that is refurbed anyway? It either works or it doesn't and if it doesn't tigerdirect will probably send me a new one for close to nothing. Hmm, i wonder if i should just jump over to buy.com and buy from them. decisions, debates!

wait, now it all is coming into focus. That seems like rather a lot of money for such a card. It must be a type. A combination of both Buy.com being jacked and Tigerdirect.com having something up their sleeves. Regardless, i am a poor student.

I wouldn't say there is an issue with different brands of wifi cards, but it does help to get a brand you like and to stick with it. Right now I have a Linksys router (.11b), SMC PCMCIA Card (posting with it now ), DLink USB adapter for the family PC, and a Linksys PCMCIA for Dad's laptop. Out of all of them, the SMC card (which was also the cheapest) has the best range and setup program. The Linksys card is good too, but the setup program is so oversimplifed it just plain SUCKS.

I'd avoid Linksys stuff at all cost, except for maybe the routers, because that isn't too bad.
