Can anybody help?

Trying to find the problem with my brothers computer (used to be my computer for nearly a year and had no problems with it), only problem is that he is roughly 450 miles away and not to good with computers (he knows how to use them as a user - has no idea about settings etc but knows not to touch anything he doesn't know about).

Anyways, have been sent a screenshot of the problem (click for a larger pic). Have checked all settings, checked to see if card and HSF are firmly attached, tried different monitors (LCD and CRT) and drivers (2 versions of ATI and windows standard) and still no joy. Problem occured while watching a divx video and has been the same since, he had changed nothing since I set up the computer nearly two months ago.

Specs (in case you were wondering) Shuttle SB75G2, P4 2.4@3.0 GHZ, 1GB OCZ Ram, 250GB Seagate HDD, Hercules 3D Ppophet 9800 Pro 128MB, Pioneer DVR-108.

(Click for larger pic).

If I had access to the computer I would persist but at the moment I am thinking of just telling him to buy a new card, he needs his computer for uni (i.e. games and movies).

Thanks.

For starters, he is in safe mode. The drivers are of no bearing when in safe mode, as generic drivers are loaded. Does the screen look goofed up during POST and in CMOS or only in Windows? Has he tried a "load last known good configuration"? Will the computer not boot normally? If it is giving BSOD or auto restarting, navigate to c:\windows\minidump and post the most recent minidump files.

Yeah, know he was in safe mode, just wanted to see if it was the same there (which obviously it is). No crashes, computer behaves normally. Drivers make no difference, like I said tried various versions of the ATI drivers and windows generic drivers and all give the same result - can even do 3D with no problems, just with screwed up graphics. Also (which I forgot to say in the original post) the display is screwed up during the POST too - which is why I think it is the card that is screwed. Have checked to see if it is seated correct and the HSF is attached correctly and they are.

Was just wanting to check that I haven't overlooked anything (or if anybody recognises the problem), quite difficult to deal with since I can't get my hands on the damn thing.

Cheers.

sounds, and looks like the card is screwed. Try swapping it out for a different one (if you have an old AGP card lying around somewhere)

Chunk it. Specifically, probably the VRAM on the card.

I suspect somethign happend on its move to my brothers uni (doubt it though because I used to cart it around the whole time with no problems).

Gonna get a mate who is near my brother to try out the card first but to be honest I think I'll just be telling him to buy a 6600 series card. Shame, those 9800 Pros were such good cards...
