Gateway 7426gx: Display Problem...Tried Everything....Help!!!

I never had any problem with this machine for months. Today I wanted to buy a nice carry case for the notebook and checked with few bags. There wasn't any mishandling too.

Now I am home and turned the notebook ON....I could not see anything on the display. I gave it some time...still nothing. Then I looked at the display from an angle...I could see everything but very very dim....too dim to make out anything.

Now I tried everything with the display at an angle (so that I can make out what I am doing).

1: I tried the Brightness switch (Fn)+ F8 and Fn + F7.....no change.

2: I went to the SETUP Menu during boot....and changed the LCD Brightness to MaX, then Min, Then Auto.......with consecutive reboots.....no change. I tried all this with everything barely visible. Even the boot screen is very dim.

3: I tried to reinstall the OS.....I had to leave it before it started anything as I cannot' see what I am doing.

4: I connected the S-Video to a TV and tried to see it on the TV.....Everything was perfect. The LCD still has nothing. (I have tried the switching display function before (1)...to make sure the video is directed to the LCD.....it is and not working).

I am not sure if I want to open the display.

So, I come here to ask your experiences on the display thing.

UPDATE:

The notebook is open and still not working after 3 days. I haven't tried crimping the connection points yet. I will wait until I get another inverter and see if that is the problem. If it doesn't work, then I will try crimping the hard way. The last thing I am going to do, if it doesn't work, is to put in a new backlight.

If that too doesn't work, then I have a desktop....have to buy a monitor to work on that computer.
Thank you.

Sounds like LCD backlight. Rule of thumb, stuff isn't working properly outside your OS, it is hardware. Your particular problem sounds like a perfect candidate for the backlight itself or the inverter.

Didn't someone else replace the backlight themselves? Was there a part number they listed for it? It may have been ThunderPC, but I can't recall for sure..

I repnaced the inverter with another I bought off EBay for $0.99. The display came back to life. Reassembled everything back and it is as good as new.

Thank you all for the suggestions....it was the inverter after all.

I still don't have any idea what went wrong with the original inverter....any ideas????

i got a serious problem with my gateway 7426gx. When i was playing a game on it this morning, the screen suddenly started flickering, and everthing seemed distorted, with lines going in every direction. Then i quickly managed to exit. Then, my regular desktop was messed up, their were verticl lines on the screen, aroung the mouse, and all icons. Also some icons appeared as they were fading. Now no games work, and everything is messed up.

I have already restored my computer and uninstalled, and installed my video card driver which if a ATi mobility 9600/9700 series driver. I also lower DPI to 96 and my hardware accelaration is near lowest. This managed to get lines gone, but no games will work. They just get all distorted.

PLEASE I NEED HELP!!!!!

Sharoon, why didn't you just send it for a RMA? It's within the manufacturer's warranty.

Avicenna, as long as you don't get any distortion on the bios, just in the OS itself, you can be assured its a driver problem. What version catalyst or driver are you using, the stock ATI's or Omegas. Some of them are buggy so try some different versions. If it is indeed a hardware problem, call gateway and they'll RMA it, or if you bought it through Best Buy they'll facilitate it if you bought theyre PSP extended warranty. Make sure you don't leave any trace of overclocking utilities just in case; if you ever did. Good luck.

I wanted to know the notebook inside out as I am taking it overseas.....far far away from any support centres. This way I may be able to diagonise problems myself in the future.
