What Kind Of Paint Should I Use To Custom Paint My Laptop?

Ok, so I searched and searched and searched, and for all the stuff I found on how to custom paint your laptop, I could not find something on exactly what kind of paint I should, use, as far as something that will stick well to the laptop. Can I just walk in to fred meyer and get some modeling paint, or do I need something of higher quality? any suggestions would be greatly appriciated.

you didnt read any good reviews then. you need spray paint like the stuff they use for cars. you need primer, paint, laqcuer, and some other stuff. make sure you read a good review before you start painting your lappy.

and then pray it fits when you are done. If you have no talent as an airbrush painter; don't try.

Also be aware that some manufactuers will say you voided the warranty by painting since you have to remove security stickers inside to do so.

There is a little known fact that I would like to share with you all. I know some of you who are desktops modders know about this and its limited colors, but there is this great stuff called Vinyl Dye. The only draw back to using vinyl dye is that you can only use it with plastic. The nice thing is it actually soaks into the platsic and changes the color that way instead of sitting on top of the plastic pieces (hence chance of flaking/scratching off). If you happen to scratch a piece of plastic that is vinyl dyed you really can't tell as it is soaked in throughout the plastic. I use it to re-color all my optical drives on my desktops cause I like a black or blue motif. Now the draw back to vinyl dye is it won't work on metal parts, and not being a laptop owner at the time of this writing I have no idea how many metal parts there are on a laptop, but it works nice on plastic as I said and you don't get the running effect like you do with other paints unless you really spray it on thick at the beginning. As long as you do many light coats it comes out looking perfect. you can look it up here http://www.duplicolor.com/products/vinyl.html and see some of the different colors and get tips by searching google.com for pc vinyl dye guides.

thats awesome. does the dye have a glossy coat though or is it just color?

BTW, some laptops are metal and some are plastic. generally, you dont want to color the metal ones anyway cause they are ussually a lot sexier than the plastic ones.

I think if you strip out the laptop and mask it off, you may be able to get an auto-paint shop to throw some color on it ( nice high-gloss finish). Check into it.

Sorry it took me so long to get back my dad had open heart surgery yesterday, he is doing good though. drizek, I don't know about all the colors, but I use a glossy black dye on all my optical drives and they turn out quite nice. I am glad I gould assists Chad.

Thank you both of you. Dad is doing great, he will get to go home on Sat. had a valve replaced. Even though the 5720 is going to be my 1st laptop I am looking at doing some vinyl dying on it after a couple of months, not too worried about anything as I have modded too many desktops and LCD panels to care about and they all worked after I got done with them. There was an awsome mod I saw where the guy did the light blue, and before it dried sprayed it lightly with the silver, then did another light blue over it. Kinda gave it the Candy look cars have. Trying to find the forum it was in now. Post it if I can find it.

Here is what my Optical drives (dyed glossy black) look like compared to my standard flat black bay covers. They don't look this bad normally, I am zooming in really close so you can get a good look at the gloss.

Here is a distance shot so you can see the differance and you can't see the defects.

It is still a work in progress, you can even see some of the UV light coming through between the drives.

thanks. make sure to post pics of your 5720. when i was thinking of buying it, i was thinking of leaving the metal back on the lcd the same color, painting hte black parts glossy black and painting the white parts red.

kinda like the ferraris, although i hadnt even seen one before i thought about it. black/red are my fav colors.

also, painting laptops is, IMO, much cooler than paitning a desktop. with laptops, other people actually get to see it and it serves a practical purpose(paint strengthens it, dyes stop the palmrests from wearing off)

Just waiting for the check to show up so I can order the 5720. I too am thinking a red and black theme, but I may do some airbrushing on the cover as I have been reading that it is metal. Probably do a redish dragon breathing fire or something. Will definately post some pics when I get around to doing it.
