Considering I already own this computer and it's great other than the slowdown in speed when burning DVDs, I think your advice is useless. Pardon.

i've had really good luck with Verbatim... i called the OEM that makes my external burner and they said they use Verbatim to spec their equipment... before i'd always used Maxell...

my XPS has a Sony really wanted the NEC but it's worked fine although i prefer my external and i like having a different brand just in case something weird won't burn/play on one, it might on the other...

btw, the tech at the OEM told me he would never burn at very high speeds for several reasons... the only one i remember was that the laser gets much hotter so it's harder on it... he said the slower the better plus the quality will be at max...

a tech i talked to at Verbatim told me something interesting... he said for disks that will be used in game boxes or anything else that spins a disk at very high speed (as opposed to regular playing speed 1x), that you should never bend them when taking them out... they've run tests and had reports of disks disintegrating and they traced it to ppl removing disks by pulling up on them causing them to bend...

just to add to my above post... the Verbatim tech said they found micro cracks that were the cause...

With my Sony drive, I can burn a full DVD+R in 30 minutes to 45 minutes dependign on the speed rating of the disc.

REALLY. 'Cause even when my computer reports the speed at 2.4x a full 8x-rated DVD is done in 20-25 minutes. I have written two full-to-the-brim DVD+Rs and both were done in that much time. Could this be a speed reporting problem instead of a slowing down problem?
