Do all DVD drives accept mini (8cm) discs?

Wasn't sure whether to post this in here, or Video Editing or Acer Notebooks, so sorry if I chose wrong...

I'm considering getting a camcorder which will record onto mini DVDs, but there's not much point if my laptop won't read them.

I assume that there's a general answer (e.g. nearly all drives should), but thought I ought to check somewhere first, and can't find any mention in the forum or in my documentation.

Laptop is an Acer TravelMate 8104 with a DVD Super Multi Drive (i.e. multi-format -R/-RW/+R/+RW/RAM), with a stud that the discs are pushed onto when the drive is open.

Sorry if it's a dumb question!

Thanks

Slot loading drives won't, it seems most tray load drives, where you snap the disk onto the spindle would.

well physically yes, any non-slot loading (regular tray drive) can accept a 8cm (rather than standard 12cm) media

but the question is format, what format does the drive record in, mpg, dv, etc?

i doubt they would do this to a format thats encrypted, since its you recording stuff for yourself / original content rather than like other devices (tivo) that would have copyright'd content (unless you are doing this to record movies in the theatre -jk

Thanks for the replies. I'm considering Panasonic and Sony machines. I think the Panasonic uses MPEG2, but not sure about Sony. I'm inclining towards Panasonic, as the compatability (-R/RAM) is the same as my DVD recorder, unless other factors outweigh that when I look in more detail.

I think they both come with some basic editing/burning software, so hopefully the recording format won't be too much of an issue.

Cheers

The ones I've seen can work on most tray drives, if you want to check it... ask the store if you buy a mini-dvd could you record a few minutes and test it on your laptop. If they say no, thats not a place you want to buy from anyways, since your not asking for anything that will cost them; unless it wont work on AC and requires them to open the battery to record, then they have a legit reason to say no.

Most any disc that can play on a DVD player will be MPEG2 format. Not the best format for editing, (complex edits often require re-encoding) but plenty of cuts only, simple editing and DVD authoring software available.

I know Sony finally moved away from that stupid ATRAC format they were using for music, but I don't know if they ever used (or moved to) a standardized format for their DVD camcorders. You might have to pull the product specs from sonystyle.com to find out for sure.
