FAQ: Overclocking your GeForce Go 6800 Ultra

Hopefully this can be stickied........

Download NiBiTor 2.5 here: (if you are going to flash a 7800 DL the latest version of NiBiTor 2.5a, it supports your card) http://www.mvktech.net/index.php?opt...filecatid=1283

Here are my stock bios: http://rapidshare.de/files/4660632/GOODORIG.ROM.html

Use my stock bios to mod and add to your BCD folder (read below to find out what BCD is). Stock clocks are 450/530 or 450/1060 in DDR Mode. When using NiBiTor don't put in the DDR value IE 1060 you have to put in 530, NiBiTor will read the DDR Value to you. Start small like 475/560 or 475/580 something like that, espically if you have not applied Arctic Silver 5. When I create ROMs then save them I just name them as 510C1280, it adds the .rom for you. Remember the name of each rom you create. Make a bunch so that you do not have to keep creating CD's.

I have put Arctic Silver on my card and I am currently running 510/641 or 510/1282 in DDR. I am running a fan on top of my GPU, currently temps do not go above 80c @ 510/1282 when before at much lower clocks I was hitting 95c and throttling back (with no laptop cooler or elevation of course). Here is a pic:

Good luck and remember to be careful, your're at risk here if something goes wrong. Please don't try to clock as high as me unless you know what you are doing. The Ultra needs cooling, remember that. Without the additional cooling you may get lockups/artifacts.

I use ATi Tool Beta 8 to check for errors. Beta 8 supports nVIDIA cards

To flash your card follow these instructions, hopefully they are correct....

*if you have a 7800go want to see if nvflash supports your card Type 'nvflash -c'. This will check to see if your EEPROM is supported*

DL THIS, http://rapidshare.de/files/5954877/bcd.rar.html

Put all your modded roms in bcd\cds\cdromsi\files folder, create a couple roms so you don't have to waste CDs.

Put a blank CD-R in the drive.

Open a command prompt, and get to the BCD folder. (So put the DLed file (BCD) in in the root drive like C:\ to make it easy) Then run "bcd cdromsi" once you are in the BCD folder to build your ISO image and burn it to your CD writer. It will burn the disk in dos.

How to get to the BCD folder:
Quote:
Start>Run> Type CMD> at the prompt type cd.. press enter cd.. press enter a few times untill you get to C:\. To get into the bcd folder type cd bcd. Once you are in the bcd folder then you can type bcd cdromsi
Remember the name of your rom like 450C1060.rom

Reboot, press F12 a bumch of times
Select the CD drive to Boot (Just keep hitting enter when things start to load)
Once you get to the R:\ Prompt type with no quotes "nvflash R:\bios_name_in_cd.rom"
Press "y" to confirm

Reboot once you see the R:\ again.

It's recommeded that you reinstall your video drivers after every flash.

Good luck. Post your benchmark scores and thoughts/improvements to this thread.

Thanks, Walid.

shoman... you rock dude. I can't believe you put a fan on there. Thanks for writing the FAQ here. I think I'm going to have to try to squeeze a bit more outta my card.

I'm back at stock now, suprisingly FEAR runs pretty damn well on an external monitor at 1280x1024 with the game set to high.

(ya i'm contemplating selling my lappy)

He totally needs a shroud I've already told him that though.

What do you use to type? USB/Bluetooth keyboard?

doesn't this mod also uh... kill the portability of the laptop?

Flashing your cards BIOS is risky and shouldn't even be tried by a beginner. You should just overclock in the ForceWare drivers using the CoolBits feature. If you try this method and screw up it will be permanant unless your able to get the card flashed back which i know isn't possible in the area of desktop video cards unless you have a second video card such as a PCI card installed.

Yeah it's not exactly a laptop anymore without the keyboard. It's basically a much thinner desktop.

Also, I'd hate to have all those electronics exposed for a long period of time, the dust that gets collected in there can't be good.

Why not just use slighty lower clock speeds? It's not like you'd lose much performance.

Hmmm...

The go6800 Ultra is BIO locked. You can't OC it with coolbits.

Sure you can. Uninstall the Dell provided graphics drivers and install regular drivers straight from nVidia with the modified .inf file and the overclocking options will be already unlocked in the driver properties. I usually just use the "auto detect" feature to find my max overclock even though you can usually go a little higher then that manually testing its not usually worth the trouble IMO.

where do you find these mod ini driver?? thx
post #13 of 51
@calstar Benz: everything you need to try this out is here: http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/forum/...showtopic=7427

but....
it doesn't work. only way to oc the 6800u is the bios mod.

@burningrave101: maybe you can play around with the oc-slider but they have absolutly no effect!

Really? I didn't know that. I just thought it was locked out of Dell's drivers but it worked with the modified drivers. I guess if thats true then your forced to have to flash the cards BIOS in order to overclock.

i tried ever over clocking utility and drivers but it always resets back to original setting . As if it was locked in the video bios. I even tried 3 video cards from dell. All the same. They all reset back after i close display properties. why?
