P25 Hard Drive Replacement

The hard drive in my P25 has started to die - making odd sounds and blue screens. I'm looking to replace it with an 80gig drive (it came with 60) but I'm not sure what to get. Presumably there are limitations on the speed of the drive that it will support?

I had a look through this section of the forum and couldn't find anyone with the same issue. Any help on this would be really appreciated - need to replace the drive ASAP!

Any speed will work. A faster speed will help more or less depending on the size of your files and the type of access you do. In general, faster drives generate a little more heat, but they all generate less heat than they used to. If it is an Hitachi drive, you might look for a copy of Hitachi's drive fitness test to make sure the problem is the drive

Any drive should work. Hitachi is making 40, 60, 80, 100gb in their 7200rpm series and would be a fine replacement. If the drive you have now is only a 4200rpm you will notice the difference in speed going to a 7200rpm drive. If going from a 5400rpm to 7200rpm the difference will not be near as much. Another alternative is one of the Toshiba 16mb cache 5400rpm drives. Seagate also has a line of 7200rpm drives out. I have been using a Toshiba (MK5024GAY) in my P25 which is a 50gb, 16mb cache, 7200rpm drive for alittle over a year with no issues.

I just replaced my Hitachi 7k60. (60 GB With 7200RPM) installed on my p25 with a Seagate 5400RPM 100GB. I have the hitachi on sale. It was a refurbished model which I got when I sent my old hitachi under warranty. This refurbished one works great and is covered under warranty until 9/2007. If you want to buy it, PM me and we can discuss something. Once again its a 60GB Hitachi Travelstar.

Thanks for all the help. I ordered an 80gig Samsung drive - same speed as the old one. Put it in and it works fine, and is very quiet.
