Updating OS on Apples?

Thread Starter
If I buy a G4 iBook with jaguar, do I still have to pay for the update to Tiger OS X? Or is it like an update?

Probably a stupid question but I have never used a MAC and have an offer for an iBook with Jaguar.

smaller updates are free to download much like Windows Update is. However, major changes (such as Jaguar --> Tiger) cost money. However, I believe there are upgrade disks and install disks, so an upgrade is cheaper than an install (i could be wrong on this point...)

If you qualify—truthfully you can just order from the educational site regardless—for the educational discount you can get Tiger for 69 dollars.

It's well worth it over Jaguar.

Normal price for Tiger is 129. There is no "upgrade" pricing.

no. unlike windows which slices and dices their OS installs, when u order an OS X disk it can both upgrade and perform as a fresh and full install.

as noted, yes u have to pay for a new OS. the OS X iterations are 10.1, 10.2, 10.3, and now 10.4, while windows has gone from 95, 98, Me, 2000, and now XP. the different updates that u may read about like 10.4.1 or 10.4.2, are the free updates and patches for the given OS generation, that kakaze had mentioned. in sum, ye su have to pay, and no it won't kill your wallet like a retail install disk for XP Home will do.

what is the offer on the table for the iBook? maybe we can help w/the "deal" being offered.
