My current laptop is an Alienware 51-m with the Pentium 4 3 ghz desktop proc. I only get maybe and hour or a little more a full battery (I have four batteries so I can fly from PDX to ATL). I expect the battery time to suXors.

As for the heat, I am neutered so I am not too worried about the heat.

My current lappy only has an ATI Radeon 9600 so this should be a nice performance increase.

Lol.. four batteries :-). I can see your plane trip:

*ladies and gentleman, its now safe to use approved electronic devices*

*Excuse me, Mr. Professional weight lifter, can you help me get my laptop out of my overhead compartment*

*Work work, 15 minutes* Waitress, could i get some water? Oh time for another battery!

Thanks for the water, oh i think ill use another battery with that!

jk jk :-) but heh, must be fun. Do you work out, just to carry a bag with a 12lb notebook and 3 extra bats?

Yes. Taekwondo, usually four days a week. I also get the benefit of being able to kick any Dellhead's arse that gives me shiat about my 100 lb dufflebag full o'batteries.

I am thinking about having this as my laptop cover art. What do u all think:

P4 vs Athlon FX - Equivalent Speeds

Is there a rule of thumb for comparing the speeds of P4 & Athlon FX CPUs?

For example, which is faster - P4 3.8 MHz 670 CPU or AMD FX-55 CPU?
Only kinda not really. In general the fx 55/57 are i believe 1-2 baby steps above the top of the line intel... but then again those chips are US $950+.

For the athlon 64 series... if its an athlon 3200 expect performance ~same as a 3.2ghz intel... again thats rough.

If your going to buy anything other than a mid range processor, and even if you are, and you are foolish enough to even consider the intel, check benchmarks. Tomshardware etc. is always very helpful. Also consider the applications you'll be using -- mostly WinRAR or mostly digital video editing, etc. etc.

The FX-55 and the X2 4800 are pretty similar in performance (single tasking, multi of course X2 wins) and the FX-57 tops them all for pure single task performance.

Rule of Thumb is you don't.

AMD and Intel are two different animals with unique capabilities one does one thing better than the other. Speed, is however fast the chips may deal with the task. It all depends on your applications and which chip works better doing that task.

Thanks guys

All right, I'm off to place my order.

Thanks largely to advice/opinions from those on here (as well as numerous reviews elsewhere), I've decided on a Hypersonic FX-7 with an AMD FX CPU.

Now, the only thing left for me to decide if the FX-57 is worth the additional $350 more than the FX-55.

(By the way - If I end up happy with my notebook choice, I'm going to give myself credit for thorough research. If I regret my decision, it's going to be because you sonsabitches gave me bad advice!!)

Hoss, I went with the X2 as it is very fast but has dual core which NEGATES the Intel advantage of Hyperthreading. This means you can get better performance when multi-tasking. I have an FX-55 in my Alienware ALX, a P4 in my AW laptop, and an X2 4600 in my wife's rig that I built. Of the three I think the X2 would be the best bet hence I chose it for my Fx7. Barring that, I would have gone for the FX-57.

Yeah - it was a tough choice between the FX and X2. I went with the FX because I very rarely run more than 1 application at a time. At the most, I'll generally listen to music while working, or be downloading something in the background. Since these activities aren't very demanding, and since I don't even do them very often, I opted for the faster (when not multi-tasking) FX.

And yeah again - I am going with the FX-57. I figured between the CPU upcharge (from the FX-55) and adding a custom paint color & graphic, what's an extra $1k when you're already spending $4-5k?

Anyone have a Hypersonic sales rep they'd like to recommend?

Well, you could ship me the 5k so i could buy:

You could do the custom graphics with that, though since you already have the picture like that, it might be just as well and several hundred dollars cheaper to just get that as a custom skin from PolyGFX.

Zgold it only shows a log in page . . .

Great choice Hoss. BTW: Do you have high speed internet on the Ponderosa? Are any of your brothers or your Dad alive still? I sure miss Little Joe and his paint.

Just a thought

Go to Monarch and compare same setup price wise, you may do better.

But if your going desktop check Hypes game systems, they are not a bad price compared to what your building.

Show some stats to prove it. Its hard to pwn a 4800 X2, Dual 7800 GTX, 4x raid 15,000 RPM drives with 2x raid 300gig drives for storage.

Liquid cool it

That system will be running more than fast, you can cook with the heat as well.

Oh, u have SLI? Sorry. I thought u only had one. That is the only way in which urs excels. I have liquid cooling so I can likely OC mine past yours. But your extra video card will just pwn me all day long (guess I have to go buy another 7800gtx now).
