Standby / Hibernate Option Missing/Disappeared? 8600

Thread Starter
I have an Dell 8600, and recently the Standby option and Hibernate Options have disappeared. I have installed no software of drivers that could have caused it.

So far I have, re-installed the video driver, dell notbook software, quickset software, chipset drivers and there is nothing that is bringing the options back.

The only options I have are Shutdown, Logoff and Restart

If anyone could help I would apprecite it!

Thank You

Same thing just happend to me with my E1705....how do I get it back?

The problem is within Windows itself. It can happen if you set it to standby and it keeps locking up. You can try using the hot key buttons (Fn-Esc, Fn-F1) to see if that makes it work. You can also go into power options, and make sure that hibernation is enabled. The option that is sure to work is a reformat though.

I have a client with the same issue on a tablet pc, reinstall is not an option.
Don't know if reformatting would really help, b/c I just reformatted my hard drive from scratch with XP Media Center, and I don't have that option, but I had it before the reformat, weird. Hybernation is enabled, so I don't know what the problem is.

I NEED THE HYBERNATION BUTTON BACK!!!

But I can get access to it if I switch to the classic/XP Pro sign-out method. To do that follow these steps: control panel, user accounts, change the way users log-on/off, uncheck both options.

This works if you need it, but I prefer the more attractive XP layout.

If you see the hibernate tab in the power options aplet then you are working correctly. All you need to do when shutting down in graphic mode is when you see the shutdown screen hold the shift key to see the hibernate button.

I'd be really impressed if someone knows the answer because I've researched this missing hibernate tab in the power options aplet for some time now and no one has the correct answer. Many others have the same problem.

Yeah, I don't think there is a solution!

I will contact Microsoft and use one of my account solutions.
I will report the answers.

...when you go to "turn off computer" and the message comes up hold the left shift key and you will see Standby change to hibernate

...As far as the dedicated hiberate button I will have to look for it again but it's an option in the registry you have to modify.

You don't have all of your drivers installed. Hibernate / Standby only works for ACPI compliant systems.

Hit <windows key> and <pause (break)> key, goto hardware tab, then to device manager. Answer the question marks by installing their drivers.

Under System devices in Device Manager, I have 5 ACPI things installed w/o queston marks. I only see 1 question mark, which is PCI modem.

Install the modem driver then, and report back when it works!

"Power Policy Manager unable to reserve hibernate file"
-The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.

Hello. Google brought me to this thread - seems like I'm not alone.

I have a Dell XPS Gen2, running WinXP Media Center (SP2). Before the symptoms, I plugged in a U3-launchpad enabled memory-stick for the first time, and not long since then the system suffered its first BlueScreenOfDeath. Upon restart, the standby and hibernate options disappeared (see figure).

Using the functional shortcuts to hibernate the system results in a message box, "failed to hibernate as this mode is not currently supported. Do you want to enable this mode now?"; clicking on yes generates another copy of the same box. Fn shortcuts for standby does absolutely nothing.

I attempted to rectify the situation; neither fiddling with Dell Quickset nor WinXP power management helped. All of my hardware devices have valid icons (no question marks).

Thanks in advance for any insight. I agree, madflava, it's a itchy scratchy problem...
