How to stop downclocking?

Thread Starter
When I run CPUz it reads 798 MHz, the multiplier says 6 vice 16, please help. thanks. I have a m170 with a 2.13 GHz chip.

It downclocks when it doesnt need the power, when it does it will go to normal speed. Dont worry your not losing performance.

guys seriously.. why have the cpu running at ful tilt when you dont need to.. speedstep downclocks your cpu when it doesnt need the full throttle power jump.. thats one of the ways the centrino runs cool and save battery life!... when your in-games.. your cpu will automatically run at 2.13 Ghz! so stress less.. and enjoy the fact that your CPU is running cool! when your not gaming

Well if you do need max power and want to avoid a stutter you can change the power management settings via display to 'MAXIMUM POWER'. That will give you full speed.

I did a quick test last night running 3dmark2005 at full power and a run it at dynamic settings. I noticed that sometimes there seems to be a slight stutter in both games and 3dmark2005 on the dynamic settings.

I switch to 'MAXIMUM POWER' and the stutter goes away on both 3dmark2005 and games.

3dmark05 is heavily GPU and NOT CPU dependant.. u can do whatever you like to your CPU power settings... its not gonna have a major impact on your 3dmark05 score

Only some people report a stutter, but I guess it can happen

It runs at 800Mhz in some games today, because gaming is more depends on the GPU and only loading levels will depends on CPU.

check the bios I think I saw an option to take off speed stepping or something so hope this helps

If you do that than it will stay clocked at 800 mhz.

it changes clock speed within a few milliseconds lol. This isn't something to worry about for performance.

Does anyone know how to disable Speedstep, or stop the CPU from clocking back? I want to run Nascar Racing 2003 on this machine but Speedstep is not recognising that it needs a high clock, so I get high FPS but a really slow screen update.

It doesn't seem to matter if I set quickset to max performance, or "always on" in power management, I get the same problem.

I know it's Speedstep that's causing the issue as well, as I created a batch file that runs an infinite loop to keep the clock speed up and the game is as smooth as silk.

Go to power options.. And change from PORTBAL/LAPTOP to HOME/OFFICE.. This will stop the stepping down

I had bad stuttering problems with HL2. Do not use teh Dell quicket maximum performance option. To stop downcloking use the standard windows power scheme "always on" in teh windows control panel for battery performance. I know that doing this vastly imporved my eprformance in HL2. No stuttering in teh agme and teh CPU was always at full speed. Th dell quick set options dont allow teh cpu to run at full speed.

Thanks for the help guys. I've tried both of these settings now ("Home/Office" and "Always On") but I still have the same issue. It's a pretty weird one though I think as with any other game (HL2 for example) the cpu runs at full clock, but for Papyrus racing simulators like Nascar 2003 or Grand Prix Legends it still seems to be clocking back...

... but perhaps something else is actually occurring, as the games are still getting the FPS that they should, it's just that the games themselves run very slowly... like the game threads are not being assigned CPU time.

Like I said, if I start up a batch file that runs in a permanent loop all of a sudden the games start getting the cycles that they should. I've also tried changing the priority of the processes and that hasn't helped either!

That seems weird. Are you sure you are using teh always on option in Windows COntrol Panel? I know my CPU is running at full know - I have Centrino Hardware COntrol Center running which tells you teh CPU speed.

Yep, using Always On, and even though Centrino Hardware Control says I'm running at full tilt the problem still happens. It's as though the game requests for CPU time are being ignored by the OS.

Under 2K you could permanently disable Speedstep as the support software was provided by Intel, but as it's built into XP I don't know of any way. I've also tried disabling in BIOS and a registry key change which was supposed to sort it out but neither of them have worked either.

i'm fine with SpeedStep...

i set Windows Power Scheme to "Always On", use RMClock>Management tab>Performance/Power Profiles & Management Mode to customize Performance/Power and get the lowest voltages... it has much finer control than Windows...
then it might be the game lagging?

Because it sounds like you've done everything possible.

Set To Always on
CHC set to Max Performance

Should easily do it..
I would agree that it is game lag, except that when I run a batch file to get the processor to run at maximum speed, ie like the following:

eatcpu.cmd
-----------
:nuthin
goto nuthin

The CPU goes up to full clock, and the game runs as smooth as silk!

Dozzit, thanks, I'll check out RMClock and see whether that helps.

whats running in the back ground? what is starting with windows.......what is checked in configsys startup tab? what is running if you control alt del and check the process that are running?
