i6000 slowness

Thread Starter
My computer was running much slower then usual so I asked a tech friend of mine what I could do to speed things up and he recommended buying some more RAM since I only had 512mb. I bought 1gb more that was compatible with my computer, but my computer is still running very slow. Is there anything else that I can do?

first thing is your power settings-do you have your cpu throttled down?
plug power supply in
goto
start
control panel
system
the splash page will show your cpu speed.
if slower than your listed cpu speed then you have to go set your power settings to reflect what you want.
guessing this is your problem

run spyware scans.

Also, you don't leave AIM open all the time do you? I find that AIM has a huge memory leak and if open for more then 24 hours it will even kill my desktop which is significantly faster then my laptop

I have run all different types of virus scans and spyware and everything and I haven't added any new programs for these like Norton. It still goes slower then the first two months when I bought it.

Have you tried defragging your HD? And you may also want to check your process list in Task Manager to see how your CPU is being used and what's using it.

I defragged about a week ago. i have several processes that are called SVCHOST.exe that take up quite a bit of space. I don't know what they are but I don't know whether I can close them or not.

download a program called regsupreme-they have a free trial version
report back

Defrag your PC
Run Spybot and Ad-Aware to remove spyware
Make sure you have all updates (Windows, drivers, etc.)
Go here: http://www.ccleaner.com/ and download that proggie
It has an additional reg cleaner with it as well
Tweak your services to disable ones you dont need
Use both a firewall and AV
Routinely clean and defrag your PC

I ran regsupreme and it found several errors that it fixed, but the computer still runs slow. I also ran the ccleaner registry cleaner and it found several more errors, but did not help with the speed.

When you say "it runs slower", do you mean it seems slower when it's just computing (CPU/RAM is slower), or it seems slower because it seems to thrash the hard drive alot?
Your answer to this makes a difference in diagnosing the problem...
EDIT: Just for a quickie check, look at your Windows Task Manager and take a look at your CPU load over time. Do you see heavy spikes in usage, where the CPU hits near/at 100% for awhile, then goes back to low numbers?

is your hard drive in the proper mode?
maybe in pio?

the cpu usage is usually under 20% unless i open up 2 programs then it goes up to 90% or above and stays up. IT seems to take much longer to do everyday tasks like opening programs up. It also takes quite a long time turning it on (almost 4 minutes). I don't kno how to check what mode my hard drive is in so i can't say if it is in pio.

Can you perform a reformat? That would cut off software issues..

To check your hard drive operating mode:
Go to Control Panel->System->Device Manager
Under IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers, click on your primary and secondary IDE channels (one at a time--simply check one after the other), right-mouse-button->properties.

Go to the Advanced Settings tab, and you should see Transfer Mode and Current Transfer Mode information.

You have an issue if any of the "current transfer mode" entries show PIO or some Programmed I/O or some such.

The 0002 was missing from the first picture. I made a typo.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class
