Short XPS M170 Review

Thread Starter
Recieved my laptop yesterday. I noticed right away how much lighter it was than the Alienware Area51m 7700 I owned before it. I feel it looks a whole lot cooler also. Anyway, the break down.

2.13ghz
2GB Ram
7800GTX
Windows MCE

LCD: Great display, no dead pixels and I don't notice any of this sparkle effect you guys are talking about. There is some light leakage at the bottom but it is minimal. The computer started up with no problems. Installed 3dmarks 05 and got 6638 right out of the box.

Sound: Not as good as the Area51m but good enough. Sometimes the sound sounds a little distorted but most of the time it is great during games and music.

Gameplay: That's why we buy this machine right? Games run awesome. My 7700 which had the 6800 Ultra, 3.4 P4, 3GB ram could not keep up with this. The 7800 GTX is a beast. I ran World of Warcraft in 1920x1200 with all settings to max, even AA at 4x, and got 30+fps constant w/o drop during fights. At such high resolutions I felt AA was unnecissary though and turned it off. 60fps constant at everything else maxed. The 7700 couldnt touch this, it was stuggling at 29fps and choppy. Quake 4 runs beautifully in max settings. AoE 3 I need to tone it down to the next highest widescreen resolution but still great graphics. Overall I am very very impressed.

This thing is a beast and considerably quiet. I barely notice the fans during intensive gameplay and it runs cool. This machine was built for gaming. I reinstalled a fresh copy of Windows this morning and notice a nice difference in loading. Still get the same 6600ish 3dMark05 score but that is more than enough for me. One thing I noticed is that the 81.85 drivers are sluggish in games compared to the official drivers from Dell, so I reverted back. Not sure if I am doing something wrong but it made all my games really choppy. Not going to touch overclocking for now, this laptop can already run it all.

I'm very happy with Dell's product and impressed by the 7800GTX. I can't wait to get into more of my games when I have time. As I get more use out of it I will update this review. I recommend this system to anyone looking for a light weight gaming machine for a decent price.

i am extremely happy with my m170, no sparkles and very solid stable machine.

So you installed the new GeForce drivers and got a 200pt boost in your 3dmark05 score. Very cool I guess I need to install the new drivers.

yep, i did that for the instant boost....

I got my M170 a week ago and I've been doing almost the same stuff as Trebor, and got the same experiences. No sparkles, a bit of LCD leakage in the bottom - but only something I pay attention too when watching DVD, which I won't do much anyway.

I also benchmarked in 3dmark 05 and scored around 6700 with the Dell 78.30, and LESS with the LaptopVideo2Go 81.85 drivers ( picking the 81.85 as they are WHQL Certified ). And scored less??!?

Anyway, I'm gotta try out the 81.87 drivers reading your scores, Fidget :-) Are they the ones from LaptopVideo2Go?

And what is that Auto OC?!? :-)

Thanks I just bench myDell XPS-M170 and got w/ 2.13, 1gig ram, 100gb, 7800 GTXWindows XP PRO

6689 3Dmarks 05 78.30 drivers
6930 3Dmarks 05 81.87 drivers
7292 3Dmarks 05 81.87 drivers w/ auto over OC on and a targus laptop cooler under it to help it exhaust the heat because after three atemps and locking up I adjusted it so that was under the video side and finnally it finsh a benchmark but I must say after all that its powerful out of the box.

they are the laptopvideo2go ones... auto OC is a nvidia thing that is through the control pannel that lets you automatically overclock the video card, it means you dont have to go to the trouble of manually overclocking the card.

Hey!

How many percent did you OC the GPU? What MHz frequences did you find to be stable?
Well it was full auto OC so I dont know what the driver set it at. But I can tell you this it must have been pretty high because I was seening artifacts.

Thanks for the review. I needed to hear from someone who had both the XPS and the m7700. I think I'm closer to picking one.

Just curious: What do you think of MCE? It doesn't really interest me at all, but I've never used it.
