The 9890 vs. 9750 thread!

Thread Starter
I was originally going to buy a simple notebook and a decked out gaming desktop PC, but I changed my mind and decided to get a G5 Mac and a decked out gaming notebook instead.

So the great debate is on... in your opinion, which notebook has better performance? An Intel-based 9890 or an AMD-based 9750? As you know, the 9890 has faster RAM, but the 9750 has X2 and FX processors. Also, I specced out some notebooks on Hypersonic's website (just for price comparisons, since PCTorque hasn't put up a 9750 pre-order page yet) and the AMD-based notebook was $1000 more than a similarly configured Intel rig. What's up with this? Hopefully its just Hypersonic overestimating the price of the AMD rig...

I'm leaning towards getting a 9750 with an X2 4800. But I keep wondering if a 9890 with a Pentium 3.8 would serve me better? Oh, the choices! I hate it when I can't make up my mind. I'll be running the standards: Creative Suite, Studio MX, Maya, and of course... GAMES!

Post your opinions!

Personally, i'd go for the AMD, since AMD are better for gaming, and I could get a Dual Core in a D900x chassis The 9890 has faster RAM, but isn't DDR2 about as fast as DDR anyway?

Just ignore the fact that my current D900x is a Intel and my next one will be a intel

if you go for pure gaming, pick the FX or X2 processors, they are faster and runs cooler than the P4 so you can even overclock them more easily. Multicore will help you for softwares like Maya or creative suite, softwares that make use of the dual core architecture. For games, a FX is going to be faster.
Is money really an issue, you just bought a G5 and you are thinking about buying a 9xxx

I wouldn't base your decision on RAM speed. DDR2 runs at a higher clock speed but it uses higher (slower) timings than DDR. Most users would be hard pressed to tell the difference between two otherwise identical machines using DDR 400 and DDR2 533.

If you plan on keeping the laptop for a few years (and, presumably, at $5k+ you will), then I'd recommend the dual core AMD. It will run games quite nicely, though the FXs will run them a bit better. But in truth GPUs have a much greater affect on games than CPUs so I wouldn't sweat the minor CPU differences.

Although there isn't currently a lot of software optimized for dual cores (or Intel's Hyper-thread P4s, for that matter) future software releases will--including games. In the meantime the dual core will make multi-tasking much faster, if you do much of that.

That used to be true, but newer ddr2 533 ram uses lower timings that clearly outperform the ddr 400 ram now. Still, it's not enough for most people to really notice all that much.

Does anyone know if intel is planning to release a Pentium D cpu (dual core) that will support the 915 chipset in the 98xx??

No. The new Dual core Pentiums will require either a 945 or 955 chipset MOBO... http://www.tomshardware.com/cpu/20051010/index.html
