Peace of mind as to why buy a Sager

Thread Starter
I found some info about laptop manufacturers while figuring out if I should buy another laptop, And what I found was very interesting which answers the question WHY Buy a Sager? Well why not buy a Sager we are in good company here is why.
Quanta Computer is the world's largest notebook maker, which is called an Original Design Manufacturer (ODM). Quanta sell their notebooks computer to many different OEMs such as Dell, HP, IBM, Acer, Sony, Gateway and Apple who then install CPU, System memory and Hard Drive, then put their own label on it which is so-called "name brand" notebooks computer and sell it. How interesting the notebook computer industry is...

So, when you buy DELL, HP, IBM, Acer, Sony, Gateway and Apple these so called "name brand" notebooks computer, actually they are made by Quanta. Of corse, these name brand notebooks not only made by Quanta but also made by other ODM such as Compel, Wistron, Inventec, ASUS, FIC, Mitac, Elitegroup (ECS), Arima, Clevo and Twinhead depending on the percentages.

ChemUSA carry high quality notebooks computer such as Chembook 2500 (made by Quanta), Chembook 2050, Chembook 2051 (made by Compel) and Chembook 2300 (made by ASUS).

Quanta (ODM) makes Chembook 2500 (Quanta Z500), the GamePC GPN-CEN2, the AMAX Z500A and PowerNotebooks PowerPro C3:16. They are all the same notebook and OEM by ChemUSA.

----- "Quanta Computer, the world's largest notebook maker, may ship over one million notebooks in October on increased orders from major brands, according to sources. Dell, Quanta’s largest notebook customer, is reported to have placed an order for 250,000-300,000 notebooks to be shipped in October, sources added. Hewlett-Packard (HP), Acer and NEC combined will account for another 300,000-400,000 notebooks in October, according to sources. Quanta’s other major clients, including IBM, Sony, Gateway and Apple, have also increased orders." ----- Source: DigiTimes.com [Tuesday 2 September 2003]

Compel (ODM) makes Chembook 2050 (Compel CL50), the Hypersonic AVIATOR CX5, the AMAX Elite 6053M and the PowerNootbooks PowerPro M 5:16. They are all the same notebook and OEM by ChemUSA. Also Compel ODM make Chembook 2051 (Compel CL51) OEM by ChemUSA.

--- "Hewlett-Packard’s (HP) new 15.4-inch wide screen notebook, the Pavilion zt3000, is being manufactured by Taiwan-based Compal Electronics, sources said.") -----Source: DigiTimes.com [Friday 3 October 2003]

ASUS (ODM) makes Chembook 2300 (ASUS M3N), the Mar Labs SuperTalent M3N, the PowerNootbooks PowerPro C 3:23. They are all the same notebook computer and OEM by ChemUSA.

Clevo (ODM) makes the Sager NP8890, the ProStar 8814 and the Voodoo ENVY M:600. They are all the same notebook computer. Clevo also makes the Sager NP5680, the ProStar 5614 and the Voodoo ENVY m:460. They are also the same notebooks computer.

Well, you know what's going on about the Notebooks computer industry. Why spend more money to buy these so-called "name brand" notebooks. This info is old but you get the point bottom line is it all boils down to service, Fact is our laptops D87P NP8790 etc.. or any other Sager brand is cranked out mostly by Clevo so design is a big part but service support is everything.

I hope everyone finds this a piece of mind as I did.

Good job on your research & posting this information!!!

You’re 100% correct when you say "service support is everything"! I've worked for the large computer companies, meaning Digital Equipment Corp. (now Hewlett Packard) as an Engineer & IBM Corporation as a Systems Analyst. And both companies put a lot of emphasis on their service/support in their hardware & software products. This is a major factor that keeps them afloat, but in a sense they have too with the prices you pay for their computer systems & products.

But now with Sager & PC Torque, my son and I both had to deal with their support initially when we purchased our computers. I own the NP8790, and my son owns the NP9860 which he purchased a couple of months ago. We had to call support the moment we opened our boxes, mine being physical damage and his being a power supply that smoked. Neither of us settled for the excuses that were given us etc..., we had to CONTINUE to fight for what we wanted them to do for us! In both cases, and when the timing was right, we contacted Luke McBride (w/PC Torque) who did an AWSOME job as are spokesman to Sager. I would say if you're having problems with your computers, don't give up the fight after talking with one or two people, not everyone who you talk too (as most of you may well know who's had to deal with them) are at the same level of technical expertise, or knows how to effectively communicate with the customer (although with PC Torque, Luke was good at both!). My son and I have had Excellent results, but ONLY after pursuing the issues! We didn't give up!

So far after having my system a little over 1 year, I’ve only had to update my bios, reload my mouse drivers and find out how too clean my unit correctly (and I’m sure my day is coming to have to send it off for maintenance…), and I use it for extensive video editing & rendering and occasional gaming with Halo. My son is an intense gamer, in college and will be doing some video editing with his system. So we need computers that can perform consistently, and just as important when needed…SUPPORT, SUPPORT, SUPPORT from Sager!!!

I agree, service & support are key to notebook purchaser satisfaction...which is why I shall probably NOT buy another Sager notebook. Between the reseller and the service techs trying to shunt me off on each other, the waits for service callbacks which may or may not be made, the general disinterest on the part of the CSRs to deal with my problems in constructive ways, and the fact that they don't keep the ATI video drivers up to date in a timely fashion, I am very put off by the whole Sager experience.
All of which would be academic if the notebook just worked, every time, for years, like my previous notebook, a Sony VAIO. In two years I never had to surgically disassemble the VAIO to clean the dust out of the active cooling ducts to prevent the CPU from melting. I also never had to call Sony tech support; it might suck -- but who cares if the notebook just works?

I am not going to buy another Sager!

My computer has been in for extended warenty repair going on three weeks now. Waiting for parts. Because of the artifacting issue I am using my old Dell and it will run more software than this $4,000.00 clunker because of the graphics card problems. I got mine when they first came out and I use it for my work, and I am going to use my 5 year old dell Pentium three, until I get the Sager 8790 back. I do have Warrantech for an additional two years and their service also stinks. They will not even look at it unless I completely restore to purchase condition. I have so much software on this and it will take a weekend to reinstall and tweak. I bought a new hard drive and restore to original condition on that one instead. They will not look at it if I do not send it back with the hard drives, memory and batteries. I have had Dell and Toshiba notebooks and serviced them both. They both request you remove your peripherals including the hard drive. Warrantech wants the unit to artifact in safe mode. That of course most likely won't happen because safe mode does not access 3D and loads basic drivers. On top of this my DVD/CD burner does not burn either.

I guess that I do not expect the computer to be perfect and I understand that things go wrong, but it is obvious that this is a problem and they should recall the 8790 to fix them. Evan after a few years you would expect that your laptop could be a standby or give it to the kids to use. I think this possible could have a class action suit someday.

I buy laptops for our company and this was a trial of sort. I had read good things on this forum about Sager. I am buying Dell again and out of 9 new laptops in the past two months two have needed repair and we got it in one day. They sent the air currier in the afternoon and we got it back fixed the next afternoon. I know they may think I am exaggerating or I don’t buy any at all, but at the very least this is one customer they have lost and I will never use Warrantech again for extended warranty. No one in this loop is sensitive at all to our need for a working computer and timely repairs.

I posted some of this info in another thread, but I wanted to make sure that everyone knows that even for a known problem it is very hard to get service.
