Backing up onto external HDD through Windows?

post #1 of 20
Thread Starter
Ok, so I guess I am retarded. I cant seem to figure out how to backup my HDD onto this WD Passport external I got today. I usually just do things ala copy/paste/click/drag/drop, out of lazyness. But I seem to remember there being a backup utility somewhere in Windows, though I cant find it now...
I want to use the backup utility, because the dragging/dropping/C+P isnt working, since theres some file being used that I cant transfer. I wanted to find the Windows one, but if anyone knows of a cool free-ware/firmware program or app. that does the job and is easier/better, please do tell!

Positive reps to everyone who helps me out here!

Ok dont feel like checking, but try right click on C: goto properties, then tools tab, then lowest button backup now.

You want the rep or not? I looked at your post manually, and it looks like you got your black dot; does it matter to you?

start->run->Open: ntbackup.exe

If you have XP pro, you can use a process called Ntbackup. Here's a link with instructions: http://www.theeldergeek.com/backup_using_wizard.htm

edit: darn, DaddyOf2Girls beat me to it!

It may be located in your start menu under.

Start->All Prograrms->Accessories->System Tool->Backup

Did it work for you? Rep away if so. Makes no diff. I can give and receive rep with the black dot. If it didnt work you might have xp home. If so dont worry bout the reppage.

Microsoft does love its Wizards and NTBackup is no exception. The first time NTBackup is launched from Start > All Programs > Accessories> System Tools > Backup, the program will open to the Backup or Restore Wizard by default. To escape the Wizard, remove the checkmark from Always Start in Wizard Mode and click Advanced Mode.

Not sure why RK's did not work for you. His suggestion works for me, but I have XP Pro.

Installing the Backup Program on the Home Version
Added 4/1/02

By default, the NTBACKUP program is not installed on the home version.

You can find it on the CD in the \VALUEADD\MSFT\NTBACKUP directory

Since not all vendors include the actual source code for XP,
you can download a copy
http://www.onecomputerguy.com/windowsxp_tips.htm has this info and a link to DL it. It's pretty far down the page, best to use the 'Search this page' (ctrl f) for 'ntbackup'...

You could always get a copy of norton Ghost (now called "live state") and back up your data that way. It works great and it compresses the info so it dosnt eat up as much of your HD.

Can this be used to clone a hard drive's complete contents from one HD to another...

Can this (ntbackup.exe) be used to save a backup file (.bkf) to an external Storage Drive, then move the .bkf over to a new drive and run the boot disk on the new drive?

i've had problems with making automatic backups with the windows built in backup software. whenever i would assign a date and time it would seem fine, but it would never back it up.

i guess i'll try ghost (livestate)....

Not sure where this thread is going right now, as I think has been established XP Home does not have a backup utility installed by default.

If you scroll through this page, you can find a freeware version of this backup tool:

http://www.2brightsparks.com/downloads.html

Not used it myself but it's meant to be good.
