Yes. If you are running XP do the following.

Control Panel -> Performance and Maintenance -> Power Options

Click the Advanced tab in the window that pops up.
In the drop down selections that appear where it says, 'When i close the lid of my portable computer' select 'Do Nothing' from the list.

Now when you close your laptop lid nothing will happen. The screen will turn off but the system will continue running.

Uhh it might be possible but I wouldn't recommend it. All laptops are designed to run with the lid open as the machine radiates a good deal of heat out through the keyboard. With the lid closed, the heat cycle is broken and....yeah I wouldn't recommend it. just close it most of the way, but make sure there's some room for heat to escape.

I don't think you'd have a problem with heat when closing the lid. I usually have mine set to go to sleep, but I've used it many times before, and never had a problem with heat hurting the screen. It's a fallacy. Many notebooks are constantly used when plugged into a monitor, and then people do run them while they're closed. People even game with them and everything while they're closed, and they don't have problems.

Regardless of closing it, there is a FN Key combo to turn off the display when the screen is open.

Yes, just don't forget which buttons do this. Seen it before, and they were freaking out.
