Windows Apps on linux. READ THIS

Tonight i played with a few windows apps. As soon as i get my optical units back working on (messing up with the kernel) i will also try CS:source.
For the moment:
Internet exporer (crossover office, trial)
Macromedia Studio mx (crossover office, trial)
World of Warcraft (latest cedega, i have subscription)
Mozilla for windows (wine)
The recipie:
Downloaded the latest Wine from www.winehq.com for my distribution (vector linux) which happens to be slackware based so i took the tgz and
installpkg wine-bla.tgz
Got cedega 4.4.3 for my distro
installpkg cedega-bla.tgz
downloaded the trial crossover office, ran the installer.
modified only the cedega config to use windows like meomry allocation. There is a line in /home/paul/.transgaming/config something like MemoryAllocation=1x00000000 smthing like that. uncomment it. At the d3d section of the same config file make the mods proper for the graphics card you have. /home/whatever, paul in my case cause that is my name.
the dreamweaver install was straight forward. Now screenshots:

http://img464.imageshack.us/img464/2059/wow8qv.jpg World of warcraft
And adobe pagemaker: http://img464.imageshack.us/img464/5...gemaker9vh.jpg
Hope this helps. InDesign CS i'm going to try soon.

Paul, I am really surprised that you want to run IE under Linux. I'm even more surprised that you want to run a Windows version of Mozilla under Linux; why not just run a native Linux version?!

Using Wine or Crossover for big applications like the Adobe suite is understandable. As for everything else, I recommend the following web page for finding Linux alternatives to common Windows applications: http://www.linuxrsp.ru/win-lin-soft/table-eng.html . I should also note that you might find it cost-effective to purchase a license for VMWare Workstation 5. It is a full x86 machine emulator and the performance is superb (there is only about 10% in CPU overhead). You can get a 30-day trial and if you're a student in US or Canada, you can get special pricing.

I installed IE under linux because various windows applications depend on it, and a windows version of mozilla because world of warcraft needs it. And btw i use firefox for linux and on windows i use ff also. I hate ie

Glad to know Macromedia's stance on programming a little more WINE friendly hasnt changed much, thanks for the post.

Myself I will probably start running the latest snapshot of Wine and possibly Cedega for those programs I decide I want. But honestly Flash will probably be one of them, there arent many Windows programs I still run, but the occasional game, but I need to learn flash, I understand there is a Linux authoring alternative, but Ill stick with the Macromedia for the time being till I feel comfrortable with it.

Let's hope the Adobe-Macromedia merger doesn't change that.

Yea that bears repeating there Mikhail. Personally I hope the reverse happens and Adobe takes a closer look at Linux compatibility. Have to wait and see unfortunatly.

Are you using an nvidia card? I've installed a few games via cedega and they are very slow on my radeon 9700 mobile, and they aren't even 3d (Tropico and Galactic Civilizations). I'd like to get wow up and running, but i'm sure it'll be too slow to use.

Actually BigTrouble I have heard VERY good things about WOW on linux, partially due to the developers being in contact with Cedega, as well as I believe isnt there an OpenGL rendering mode in there as opposed to D3D? Now wether your card is causing a slowdown and that carries over to WOW, that one I wont touch

Really, I've contemplated running the Windows version of Firefox using Wine. There are some problems with Firefox not updating themes and extensions and some general memory issues, IIRC from a Mozillazine article.

bad idea, wine uses 100%cpu most of the time. Stick to linux version otherwise it will cripple your system

I have played WoW without any isues in Linux by using the latest Crossover Pro 6. One of the main things they made Crossover 6 do was support WoW installation. I was able to have WoW running fine with WINE before Crossover. If you are an Ubuntu user there are a couple guides out that have a step by step guide to installing WINE and WoW.

If nothing else he is doing his research on these boards, and it is proving quite entertaining

For the record WoW is known to be working, not only in Cedega(Where it works great) and Crossover, but also in Wine as well.

Cedega is working on NWN2 at the moment I believe, which I am waiting on.

I have been browsing threads of interest and giving personal feedback. I don't think I have been taking away from anything though. Especially since the threads I have posted in were still on the front pages of the sections I posted in.
On top of that I have been needing to post so that I can put feedback in the for sale section. Apparently though 25 posts will still not unlock the ability to post in the for sale section.

there's a slight delay (a day or so) after you have 25 posts before you can post in FS/Wanted. you should be fine now

I've actually been using Cedega quite a bit lately and i'll add some of my experience...

The biggest problem I have is that cedega runs many of my win games at 100% CPU. It's not an issue on my desktop, but my laptop sounds like it's ready to take off. I almost exclusively play strategy games, which is fortunate because most of them play fine through Cedega. I just got Knights of Honor working perfectly, which is one of my favs. I had to do a bit of customization because there's no profile for it, but I got everything working well. I also have Birth of America working, Civ IV and Tropico 2 working. I'm trying to get Europa Universalis III working, but I'm going to need a NOCD crack to have a chance. World of Warcraft also works amazingly well, but I've not played that in ages. I might try to get Medieval Total War II working soon.

If I was an FPS junkie then I'd say cedega isn't really worth it (even though many gaes work well), but I'm constantly suprised how many games I'm able to get working.
