I understand you are upset, and venting is fine. However please do not use racial/sexual/ethnic slurs in your posts.

Did you contact apple about getting your downloads back? A long time ago my friend lost his and they allowed a redownload. Granted it wasn't a TON but they did let him after he POLITELY and intelligently talked to customer service.

If not, give it a shot - explain the situation. Send tehm a copy of your recent purchses that you can get online, that may garner some sympathy.

Thanks

Its a bitch that your Hard Drive failed on you, but these things happen.

Try phoning apple up, and see if they can help you.

Yeah, no kidding.

I love how you use all lowercase in most every word, yet make sure to spell iTunes, iBook, and iPod as such!

Yeah, sucks that your computer crashed. But guess what... any computer is at risk of that, not just Apple. And people backup their computers for a reason... I try to do a weekly backup of my home, music, and picture folders.

Why are you glad to have this experience? You don't sound very glad.

And what do you mean by "lost 95 to 5"?
To be fair, having a backup drive is not always financially feasble. I'll also say this, Apple's implentation of digital rights management has some serious issues. I had a similar problem and as a result will no longer buy online music from anyone.

harddrive fails, it happens - on any computer - MAC or PC.

it just depends on your luck. i'd still speak to apple about ur lost itunes tracks with the proof of ur MAC harddrive being broken (or not)

i've got a PC desktop and an ibook. I feel more at home on a PC (like 4 times faster, with 17" monitor), but mac just looks 100x better, some very nice convinient functions embedded in the OS and programs, and my ibook is portable!

only thing i gotta complain about mac OS is that MS office (on mac) runs like GARBAGE - copy and paste takes like 5 seconds just to copy. but that's not really apple's fault

I'm sorry that you lost your music. But I see two things that can help. First, there is always a chance that you will lose everything on your computer. So mirroring and/or backing up your harddrive is fundamental. Secondly, Apple has a database of your music purchases hopefully. Apple needs to make public a policy about replacing music for consumers. If they have not already done so. And you need to follow up with them about your personal issue.

My professional work is on my machines and there is no one to blame but myself if I do not have my valuable work backed up. I've learned from past system crashes about the value of backing my work up. It's a costly mistake and one needs to only learn it once. I hope.

Cost-wise, if you can aford 10 gigs of music, you can aford an inexpensive secondary drive to backup your work. Personally, I've invested $150 into an external 250 gig drive to clone my systems. There are less expensive options too.

Bottom-line.... it's really not Apples fault.
You think it's Apple's fault because your harddrive died? Did you live under powerlines as a kid?

You have just as much of a chance of the drive in your snazzy XPS failing as in the Mac.

Once you buy music from iTunes Apple is obligated to allow you to download it again seeing as you already paid for it.

To do proper back ups of iTunes data you must copy the xml files inside the iTunes directory because that contains all the playlists and star ratings and such.

One great benefit of your post is that it motivated me to do a full backup of my system.

sorry guys. i was mad last night and had to get that rant out. wrote it informally in my lj and stuck it up here to c what people had to say. gla it inspired some people to back up there computers. ill be backin up my XPS2 as soon as i have recovered the majority of my music. a bad expirience but eh i guess its ok. i sent apple an e-mail about my music. hopefully everything else, including the sale of my mac will go smooth. i got it for a lil over 2k about a year ago w/ a wireless keyboard/mouse and 3 year warranty. how much should it go for on eBay or somewhere now? ill stick with apple in the mp3 market with itunes and an iPod but no sense havin an iBook when my XPS2 can do everything it did, w/o the good looks mind u, but the leds make up for that, haha.
Thanks guys

based on your sig, it seems u installed a 3rd party drive into your iBook?-seeing as how they don't come w/ 5400rpm drives...if that is the case it seems weird that u'd blame apple for the drive failure. if u've bought enough individual parts for your computer, u'll know over time that lemons can and do happen. they're the minority, but they're out there, regardless of brand etc.

it's really odd to hear of your problems after the fact. did u post about the drive issues already? what kind of failure was it? i haven't yet used Disk Warrior for the Macs but i did recently have my main 250GB drive on WINDOWS machine take a major crap. mind u windows didn't even recognize the drive as being present, nor did my BIOS, which usually means your drive is mechanically cooked. luckily Acronis Disk Director was able to recover the partitions from windows, and it's been fine ever since. maybe i/we missed it, but why didn't u ask about options for recovery?

no, that drive came stock and recovery options started at $500. thats a fraction on a brand new computer.

Actually Triadone, mine came from apple with a 5400 Hitachi HDD as did his. They did a switch during low inventory times. I called applecare to verify. They do it from time to time. I got one stock, and its very good.

hard drives fail.

but i'd dump my mac as well if apple did not permit me to redownload my purchased music.

that's what i'm getting at. by virtue of how my desktop drive was behaving one would think that it was a hardware problem and that the data on it could only be retrieved by way of "pro" hardware means. when i found that the software i had found was able to rebuild the partitions and the data on them, i was totally surprised. the last option i typically resort to in diagnosing a drive is to see whether it can be recognized and formatted w/ the manufacturer's software in DOS mode. i gave the Acronis software a shot since I figured the drive was toasted anyways, and lo and behold it worked. again, it just seems a bit weird that we heard nothing about the problem w/o what efforts u went thru to try and recover it. if it's under warranty, Apple may have been willing to try for data recovery as well. but then maybe u tried all of that, and we just didn't hear about it. what u went thru is frustrating, but nothing unfamiliar in my years of installing and managing my windows systems.

assuming u still have the iBook, where are u at w/ it now? is the drive working or not? is it working and u've reinstalled OS X? is it still not working and u've left it be? fill us in. at the very least it's worthwhile to get it fixed for u to get top $ if u r going to sell it.
